.tv What will it take

For the .tv extension to begin to have some success?

Rick Latona is not interested and all the other big players in the industry really laugh off the .tv extension as well.

So, my question is are we all just kidding ourselves or does somebody have a sound reason as to why we spend so much time and $$$ in this perceived area of weakness called Dot.tv.

RS's purchase of Flowers.mobi shocked the domainer world (and then some) and most DEFINITELY impacted the .mobi domain market. People were talking about that for a long time (and still are). There is NO denying that, IMHO.

I think it is important to bring out something that Snoop said and to me is the #1 difference between .com and .tv and that is "type in traffic".

Type in traffic is one of the main reasons that .com's sell for so much and for so high and why names that may seem crazy to us in .com sell for thousands of dollars and why much "better" names in .tv is not getting the high price sales we are looking for.

Type In traffic is like free advertising, the hardest part about any business is getting the clients to come to your door. The right .com name for your niche can bring in hundreds of clients w/o spending any marketing dollars.

Unfortunately, today there is not a lot of type in traffic for .tv (besides from domainers). I don't believe we will see a change in that for another 4-6 years.

The way .tv's will take off is more by the quality, brandability of the names. That is why I am excited about .tv's and why I think there is a huge future from a domainers standpoint as long as you have patience and as long as you are picky with your .tv portfolio.

Well if you take that approach Richard a lot of people here with 300 good to so-so .tv are in trouble because 4 to 6 years and I did a post on this a couple weeks ago, make that an expensive investment. So definitely time to trim a portfolio, and lets be honest that is not easy right now.

You had an auction that I thought had a lot of good domains (and to answer if you thought good why did you not bid? Because I do not want to buy anything all I want to do is get from 40 down to 20 .tv ) So I think that showed where the domainer to domainer .tv market is at right now. That has nothing to do with great .tv or development, I am talking just Domainer to Domainer market nothing else.

Yeah, I agree with you Ray. The secret as you mentioned so many times with this extension is development. 10 Developed .tv's are much better than 200 .tv's that you hope to make money on by selling to someone else.

The question when it comes to your own portfolio is "how many can I/will I develop in the next 1-2 years and act accordingly.

LLL.com and NNN.com were still being dropped into 1998/early 99. I know , I got some. They could not be flipped immediately. I sold some after 2 years - and now regret it very much. Kept the rest.

long-term investment can be very boring.

keep the best ones , forget about them or develop, and diversify.
