Alright, I've been seeing people reg any noun/half decent dictionary word .tv names like anything.

Now some of them make sense (LiveStockQuotes.tv), but some of them are totally unrelated to the extension. I fail to see what an end user (or the name owner himself) could do with Salutation.tv or something along similar lines.

Doesn't the .tv extension limit itself to only certain keywords? Speakers.com would be a 100k name, but I fail to see what Speakers.tv could be about. Videos of Speakers? That would be a joke. What about Salutation.tv? Videos of Salutations? Who would be your target audience? Retired army generals?

I think many people have simply gone overboard and registered any dictionary name with OVT, without realizing that the .tv extension is very specific to a particular industry..

I'm not really a .tv guy and I don't really see the sense in reggin such unrelated names...I can bet that we'll see thousands of drops by this time next year when people realize that the names just don't match the extensions.

Can somebody care to explain?

Alright...I think I've stirred the hornet's nest with my comments.

I do agree that many names are regged in that panic buying mode. I for one, had just one TV name, Ducks.tv, a fairly decent name that I sold to a fellow NP member. I'm not a .tv hater..I actually like the extension, but I simply don't see the logic behind some regs.

While the fact that an end user might pay anything for a domain in any extension carries over to the .tv extension too, I'm talking from more of a domaining point of view. EyeDomainous sold TheHill.tv for 4k, and that was an end user sale. However, how many on this forum would've paid more than $50 for TheHill.tv? None, I would say.

So just like in the .com, you can reg random names and hope for an end user. You might get lucky too and find one. But the chance of that happening with a name like TheHill.tv is very very less (I would say that TheHill.tv is a great name for a TV show nevertheless), as much as the chance of finding an end user for Zolba.com than say, Mirage.com.

Regging random .tv names with scant correlation to the extension is akin to regging names like Zokoo.com, Trafi.com, etc., only because Google and Yahoo are random names but so popular and brand able. The rules of the .com apply to the .tv also: Generics are way more valuable than brandables. But only in the .tv extension, this choice is further limited due to the constraints of the extension.

Besides, as an average internet user, I expect to find TV related info/videos on a .tv site. Clicking on a .tv link and finding text articles would be disappointing.

For example, I've seen several advertisements on NP as well as some other websites for some website called InsaneDomains.tv. This guy claims to have over 12000 domains for sale on this website. He has mostly the crappy ones (or maybe he has so many that I saw only the crappy ones), and my first thought upon looking at the site was: crappy domains on a mismatched extension...what does InsaneDomains has anything to do with TV?

Yes, you can brand anything. You can even create a web behemoth with a name like QxRetY, since development merely means inputting the right resources to get the output. The more you put in, the more you can get. I can invest a million dollars in a name like QXERTY.com, and make it a big hit with lots of advertisements, unique content etc.

But the question is, would I have that kind of capital as a domainer? I don't think most domainers have that kind of money. So for development, as a domainer (and as an end user too...not every end user is filthy rich), I'd rather have my .tv website on a relevant name than a brand able one. Keep in mind that creating original content (and if putitng YouTube videos is your idea of original content, then no one can really help you...except a shrink maybe) for a .tv website is much more harder than other extensions...you're expected to have videos, and making your own videos isn't exactly easy.

In the end, its the same debate: would you be okay if you see a Limited Company website on a .info extension? What impression will you carry from it? A bad one, my guess.
So what if you see a website about domains on a .tv extension, with no videos or TV related info? What impression will you again carry from it? A bad one again, my guess..

It took the .org so many years to free itself from the NGO image (which it still carries). Do you really think that the .tv can break free of its TV image so easily? Yes, names like TheHill.tv are good, cause they can be names of movies, shows. But names like Salutations.tv...they can never be a name of a movie or a show (unless you have a really bad imagination as a filmmaker..)

What word is Not 'worth a thousand pictures' ... on TV?

Does the word 'monitor' apply to a TV?

When I bought TheHill.TV I was told it had nothing to do with the extension. When I sold TheHill.TV (for 4k) many comments on this board were "I don't get it".

The point is... the internet IS TV! Every name is In Play! However... all TV names are not created equal... in the eyes of the beholding endusers.

Well said. I agree with "most" of your statement. I have many people telling me that some of my .TV domains make no sense... hmmm....

I have seen major corps advertise on Television and use .TV to track how successful a campaign is. We have all seen other companies with Television channels branding the .TV in their onscreen watermarks. I have personally talked with developers/producers/editors etc that work in the TV industry branding their company's URL as .TV. I have seen revolutionary applications of the .TV extension with internet TV channels/shows/media companies, I have also seen internet-only commercials playing where static banners once were, and I think we'll see much more down the road.

I have seen simple .TV sites on my network, that have nothing to do with Television or video, get picked up by Google... and fast.

almost anything is possible. almost anything can work with the .TV extension.

I'm not here to preach about .TV though... I'm not here to make sure you all buy more... in fact, I wish you all would buy less because my hitlist of available .TV domains keeps getting registered by others and I already lots to develop. :)

good luck to everyone.

Great thread ... I've bought quite a few tvs lately and plan on developing them all. I did try to get domains that were relevant to the tv extension and lend themselves easily to a rich multimedia site, and were based on very popular keyword searches, so after developing, I may look for buyers.

You must really give props to him, that's quite a number of crappy names. :notme:

Some of us managed to get some really fabulous .tv names but how many really fit the extension.

Just like now I'm not too sure about some of my names...

In particular ARIGATO and SAYONARA...common japanese words taken in almost all extensions. Initially thought they would make great jap related videos but not so sure now...

Your comments made me think back to my TV experience, as a Cable TV exec., during the rollout of cable in the 80's, when simular opinions were voiced... regarding my "Pay Audio" cable channels proposal -while with Westhinghouse Group W Cable. And later when I was a Regional VP for the Satellite Program Guide... the alpha-numeric cable tv guide.

The TV viewer/market not only accepts text tv channels, but many subscribe to audio only cable TV channels. There is no confusion or "bad impression". Folks actually think its cool... because (a good) TV service, like I said back in the '80's, is all about "giving the consumer variety & choice".

Before the web... the TV was also a (text) 'monitor'. With the web... the (computer-text) monitor is also a TV.

As we rollout .TV online keep in mind that TV is the best product for "being everything to everybody". Developing some 'alpha-numeric' / text .TV channels/sites should be part of your .TV site-network plans. When done right these sites add value to viewers and a .TV network portfolio... while enhancing the overall scale of the extension... by serving the complete TV market... which mirrors the offline TV market, and then some!

Afterall... why should the online .TV experience be less robust? Why surrender any media format (read; market) to any other extension just because they say .info, .mobi or .com. TV is the accumulation of all media formats (thats why its #1 -with a (online) bullet). 'Bundled' or 'a la carte' the TV medium is a full spectrum (audio/visual/text) player.

Salutations.TV, for example may be a better community text channel... where locals, gov, and organizations can text-in salutations / congrats for the whole community to see, than as a video channel.

but I fail to see what Speakers.tv could be about.
I think Speakers.tv would make a great site for promo videos of after-dinner speakers and lecturers, 9,470,000 for lecturers, OVT 1276... wait a sec.
OK I just regged lecturers.tv
just kidding, I didn't really. someone else can have it. (Richard?)
there are lots of booking agencies that specialize in after-dinner speakers for conventions and conferences. Speakers.tv could easily be promotional vids for people seeking that work.

Should we start a theoretical auction? $110! :sold:

the only trouble I see with Speakers.tv is that the search results will get diluted with all the audio products. Now if you had a name like ... say ... ConferenceSpeakers.tv or ConventionSpeakers.tv...hehe.
I think Chaim should give me rep for Lecturers.tv.

You know I am surprised that no one took lecturers.tv - it was available for a full half hour after you mentioned the name....and I like it and regged it......

Feel free to ask me what to do with such a name....

Thankyou Rogor for announcing it, and Richard for sleeping on it!!
