I disagree somewhat with Gifted, if you are basing your business in one country only then it is perfectly fine to use a cctld, the strongest being of course .uk and .de, if however you are basing it in USA then do not use anything less than .com, even if you have to completely trash the value by adding words that do not mean anything, since the average American has no clue that any other extension exists.

in that case it'll be a trademark and u wont have any trouble getting your comps domainname in any tld..

for starters u reg com/net/org and thats enough..

Yes, Trademark is the best way, i hope it won't cost much.

I have no problem buying com, org, net, info and country specific domain, but i was wondering if i am missing any important one.

Thank you all for the reply.

In every country (except USA) ccTLD are more important than .com
Obviously you must register keyword in the native language of that nation.

Use domaintools suggestions and seem which domain extensions are displayed. These are to my mind the must-haves. Plus, your own ััTLD. Overall the necessity depends on the site.

For numerics, .net can be ok if you are targeting the Chinese market, but generally it is good advice to avoid anything but .com.

.org can be appropriate in certain cases, though.

I think .info is the least needed of all,
only good thing is it is $1 or so @ Godaddy ;)

get all the ones you can to protect ya brand!

As a sign of how dominant .com is, we are zeroing in on the 100 million registered mark, and it is possible (although unlikely) that we hit it by year end.

This is a huge milestone to be sure, and a sign of the unwavering importance of .com as a TLD and domains in general.

However, registration has slowed somewhat over the summer.

On April 30, 2011, there were 94,549,208 .com domains registered. An increase of approximately 28,439 per day since the beginning of the year.

On May 27, 2011, there were 95,168,572 .com domains registered. An increase of approximately 22,939 per day since April 30th.

On July 13, 2011, there were 96,024,048 .com domains registered. An increase of approximately 18,202 per day since May 27th.

If the rate of increase stays at 18,202 per day for the remainder of the year, on December 31, 2011 there should be 99,136,525 .com domains registered. Close to 100 million, but not quite there.

If the rate of increase is 22,939 per day for the remainder of the year, there should be 99,541,606 .com domains registered by year end.

If the rate of increase is 28,439 per day for the remainder of the year (what it was between January and May), there should be 100,887,080 .com domains registered by year end. But registration rates would have to pick up to reach this target, and they have been slowing a little during the summer.

So, most likely we will reach the 100 million milestone in early 2012.

...the average American has no clue that any other extension exists.
And why should we? 'The best' only uses 'the best'! Second rate extensions are for, well.. second raters!

it depends on what kind of the "big website" is

Its up to you like if its a dictionary word cc tld then its valuable too. But generally you may go for org, net, in, us and some more. Name matters.

I missed .biz TLD. I think rather than using dictionary word, a new unknown word might be easy to be a trademark.
Thank You all for the replies.
