The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Are you talking about a domain that you want to sell or develop?

For selling a name, search volume means nothing to me, the amount of end-users and potential buyers is what counts to me.

If you are going to do outbound on Geo's (NewYorkFlorist.com etc etc) it would be nice to have a decent monthly search volume to share with potential clients - for this I would personally look for 500+ monthly searches. Other people might have a different figure in mind for this niche........

Really? So not at all important?

I did not say that.

You asked for minimum. So, the minimum would be zero. There are names that I like and I would never go and check search volume. Don't care if there are zero.

I am sure there were zero searches for "exxon", when that company chose that made-up word as its brand.

Search volume is just one of the parameters. I never even bother checking for it, but I am sure some investors use it as supplemental factor and do fine.

Depends on industry for example if you have 1000 hits a day in adult you probably would make cents a day. Have that in casino traffic and your probably making dollars.

Imho only when targeting a keyword does search volume matter. Brandables it's not a factor. I would not buy anything with less than a 1000 monthly searches if targeting a keyword.

That depends upon a lot of factors like whether it is brandable or not if there are zero searches. Might be a new technology or just something smart that nobody else thought about.

Some buyers want new brandable names. Just sold a brandable for 5K that was dropped before and it's not a real word (no traffic as yet) so they are going to have to get their marketing guys to work.

another question for a 1 kw in .xyz with 200k exact searches / month in a saturated market. what will be the value of such name.

Heres a picture

An exact match .xyz domain wt 300k search/month & .05 cpc

I get about 800k-1M visits/ month but i can hardly make money with ads(if i put up some)

Search vol is important when u want to develope a site , and u really need a good content to rank

Selling an emd domain based on its its search vol is kinda ... ??? Idk what to call it

If u have an emd, thats not a guarantee you'll get massive traffic , u might screw it up

Too many factors to look up

I find other aspects of the domain as more important than search volume, such as: pronounceable or not, domain's length, number of words(short or long words), what gTLD(obviously .com is still the king), brandable or not etc.
Search volume can add value to the domain, but it is only a bonus :)

One way of looking at it is through the eyes of the end-user.

If I will develop the website, what factors should I consider to make sure I'll have good ROI on the payment I made for the domain name?

1. Do I have a ready target market?
2. Will I be seen by my target market? Will I rank in the search engines?

Your search volume will help you determine this.

1. You can determine your ready target market by the number of searches for the keywords in your domain name.

2. Your rank in the search engines will be boosted by your choice of highly-searched keywords in your domain.

@Larion made a good estimate:

minimum search volume: 50K per month
great search volume: 500K or higher per month

I would not reg anything below 50K per month.

However I would also take a risk on domain names that have low search volume if they're keywords from a budding/new technology that has the potential of making it big in the months or years ahead.

I was talking about a domain i want to sell. So does it means search volume is important if i want to develop it? Also how do i know about the amount of end-users and potential buyers? Is there a ressource to find it out?

Sir are you talking about EXACT MATCH SEARCH. Thanks for the answer.

Search volume only really matters for GEOs and exact match domains.

For brandables it doesn't matter at all.

Thank you, and are there some estimates if the sector is worth around 2B and there are 12k exact searches per month for a 2kw .com ?

another question for a 1 kw in .xyz with 200k exact searches / month in a saturated market. what will be the value of such name.

PS: estibot valuate both around the same price :)

Thanks.

edit : exact match, non geo domains.
I did some research, I think the number Estibot is giving out is probably what your midlevel result in a sale would be. A energy or utility business would not be surprised to to see you get 50k.

Curious to learn more: (1) What's your sense of what made them spend $5k for no traffic when they could hand-reg it another with their creativity? What swung the deal? (2) Also what is your definition of a great brandable name? If you looked at a name and said "that's a great brandable name" what elements would it have for you to say Great? Your thoughts?
1. Nothing swung the deal. It was bought at the price I set by an unknown buyer. Automated purchase. No website yet.
2. This name had to do with vitality so a generic sounding positive word that suited the new owner's requirements. I guess they wanted a fresh sounding name. It appealed to me because of the wise range of uses within beauty, cosmetics, canna, healthcare etc which meant a wider market to sell it.

re: NewYorkFlorist.com: Where does one find what the monthly searches are for it? Do you google an exact search quoting: "NewYorkFlorist.com" OR "NewYorkFlorist" OR "New York Florist" OR something else? Hoping to get unconfused... I'd like clarity. thank you...
I have many domain names that have millions of monthly searches. I am developing most of them right now.

For me that number is 45,000

beside volume (I would look for 30k+) CPC, mainstream alternatives, product prospects, margins and so much more comes into play than just gross traffic when evaluating.
