Some time ago I had the idea of a web site. I thought about it and I thought about a name for it. I found the name was already taken.

However, it was just showing a parked page with contact details to purchase the domain. I thought about it for some time, then I contacted the seller. The company was asking for an outlandish price. I countered a value 7 times lower. We finalised on a deal a little over my offering price.

Later, still doubting that I paid too much I came to NamePros and asked for an appraisal. Which more than confirmed my doubts. Then I realised that I was not ready to launch a web site, there were many things to learn. So I kept visiting NamePros and tried to get into the tune, buying domains. Didn't go too well at first.

Then I think I started getting better at getting good names. I did not sell any yet though. Most of the time I try to think of development plans, and how they can help with my real project, that first domain I bought. Certainly my financial situation does not look good now but I hope it will improve when I start selling.

Years back I registered a name and built a website just for fun. It took off and I found myself trying to answer hundreds of emails a day. (I wish I had known the value of that kind of traffic then...) After a while I took down the site. During its peak I payed for like 5 years of renewal fees figuring I'd keep the site going for quite some time. I didn't expect that it would get out of hand and I'd shut it down.

Anyways one day I got the email saying it was time to pay my renewal fee and I had about a month to debate whether I wanted to renew the domain. I knew about parking, but had dismissed it long ago as I didn't think it was worth the time. I decided I'd give it a try. Turns out the domain I had still gets 10-15 uniques a day even after bieng a 404 page for close to five years... The name earned its reg fee before I had to pay for the renewal.

I wish I hadn't dismissed it so easily years back...

i met the guy that owns superlotto.com and he told me he makes xxx a DAY. So I stumbled around and bought like 40 domains in one day (80% useless) . . . now I do it as a hobby. . . like fantasy football . . .

I was looking to buy a foreclosure in 1999. I typed-in "forclosedhomes.com"
and there was no site. (Note: the correct spelling is ForeclosedHomes.com and I did not even know that until 6 months later). 50% of the population spells it wrong. So I went to register the domain and let it sit there for 6 months not knowing what to do. I decided to get my Real Estate License in 2000 and the webmaster at the office put up a stats counter on my site and I was getting 200+ uniques a day. That night I went home and registered 50 foreclosure/real estate names and than the addition never stopped.

It seemed to me like an easy way to make some money - buy a name, park it, watch the money roll in ! - for some reason my first domain name - canadawet - did quite well at Namedrive in the first month, but since then has done nothing at all - so unfortunately it's not as easy as it seems, but I keep buying names I think will come good some time in the future - am I totally deluded ? And where is the manual to tell you what you're doing wrong ?
