What is your process after you buy a domain?

I am very new at this and am wondering what the pros do when they purchase a new domain. I would think that a person would immediately park it and try to get a few clicks out of it, but the what? Do you have your own site you list it on or do you immediately list it at an site like Flippa or Sedo?

Sorry for bumping this but there is some good info in here and I would just like to add to it if I can get some of these other newbie questions answered. :xf.smile:

You can add your domains to Sedo, Afternic etc or to a Brandable service but is there a time limit you should wait before doing so?

Reason I ask is because isn't there usually a 60 day transfer period that has to pass before you would be able to give a new owner their purchase, or transfer the domain to the service to aid in the sale itself?

It is this that confuses me when I read how people have managed to sell a new domain of theirs within a very short period (do they mean just to an end user?). I've read the service FAQs and tried searching for this info here and online but the responses aren't overly clear, and so if someone could answer this, I would be most grateful.

And again, sorry for the stupid question but one very great piece of advice I've read here is: don't be afraid to ask a stupid question as it's better than making a stupid mistake. (y)

Thanks.

To transfer the name to another registrar than there are locks. To move the domain to another account at the same registrar equals a "push" so if you were selling a new name you would just mention that it can be pushed at the current registrar and no external transfers as under registrar lock.

Okay, I understand that. Where I am getting confused is where the service states about the need for the domain to be sent to them as a part of the sales process. Does this just mean that the service will simply have an account with all the registrars or is there something specific to them you need to go through? (or something else??)

Say for example: you buy a domain through dynadot, list it for sale on Sedo, it sells. Service asks for domain to be sent to them as part of the sale process. What happens here?

If you're talking sedo etc.. than yes they will usually have their own account at the common registrars to accept a domain push.

That's good to know. It makes total (common) sense that this is the case but for some reason I had it in my head that these places had their own proprietary means of doing so, that required a transfer.

Really appreciate you answering my stupid questions @SpareDomains, thanks a lot.

If it's like a sedo broker they may say push the domain to our account, you push, they pay, then they move it along to buyer.

If it's a fast transfer system like...

https://www.afternic.com/domain-reseller-network

then domains can just disappear from your account with no intervention.

So just depends on where the domain is registered and the system you're using to sell.

Well I can definitely say I know a lot more now, thanks to you @SpareDomains, than what I did before I asked, so I'm glad I listened to that advice I mentioned previously. :xf.grin:

  1. While I'm waiting for it to hit my account, I make a PDF of any transactional info (receipt if reg'd, or emails, PMs, etc)
  2. When it's in my account, change the nameservers to either a for sale page, or if I'm developing, my hosting.
  3. If "for sale" that's it - then I tweet about it, etc. If developing, i start installing any platforms etc pretty much right away and build out the site. From there it varies if I am building a site just to flip or if I'm actively running it.

Fast Transfer is not enabled or works for Transfer Locked domains. In that case, a manual push is required

1. Add domain to spreadsheet with all info so it's in the records

2. New method for me at the moment is posting the domain for sale on Epik MP and putting a BIN with payment plan to entice more sales (more expensive names I use the 5 year payment plan with interest rate, cheaper names I use 12 months no interest rate)

3. Add domain to all other MP like Sedo / Undeveloped / Afternic / GD / Efty MP etc, and put Make Offer option only and use this for free eyeballs in case I get an offer there

4. Add to one of my sites and put info / buy link on each page for each domain with links to portfolio at top...this way I keep track of traffic better and can change links easily since domains are parked with me and not at Bodis or anywhere outside of my server

1. Add the details to a spreadsheet so I can record all info.
2. Change the Nameservers (to Efty) so the name re-directs to my Make Offer sales lander asap
3. Submit the name via the Afternic and Sedo platform (Afternic BIN/Sedo Make Offer)
4. Actively promote via Social Media (Twitter) & some Outbound
