We either knew or just guessed lucky. I got into the mobi well after land rush, first hand reg sometime in mid January, and the NNNN and the LLN and NLL were the first I went for.
My justification for number combos is NO OTHER extension made more sense to even consider numbers as a standard more than .mobi. Phone keypads are notorious for numbers (yuk, yuk, yuk) and would you know...that's what mobi is for.
But I also was well aware of the increased push towards IDN and ccTLD's and all the other chaos that the internet may soon be seeing and if there is one universal standard in languages is numbers...they all represent the same value.
As for numbers corresponding to a letter of the alphabet, there also appears to be a trend away from this, that being the English (Latin) alphabet. I have seen spec sheets and tradeshows featuring phones with no Latin alphabet but again Chinese (Korean and Japanese also) characters on the keypads.
I do not think that any one nation is more tech savvy than those of the Asian nations. Not to mention most of the cell phones and portable devices and computers we use are developed, designed, tested, and manufactured in those countries long before release and use in our markets.
I can not (and will continue to do so) stress enough to monitor global trends. Not only for the .mobi crowd, but also the .com crowd. If you were to look at a map of the world and color in the spread of trends and the direction of flow you'll see something very interesting.
So keep an eye to the Far East and look for signals of what is to come. And if .mobi goes IDN? Good Lord, what a mess all of this will be not to mention a whole new market for us to consider.
