What is the time between registration end date to available registration?

Hey all,

I'm sure this has been discussed here, maybe somebody could point me to the appropiate thread, or just anser it here?

From the time when a registration end date hits, and it goes through redemption periods, delete periods, and what not, is there an exact answer for when I can register it? Or does it differ by registrar?

I'm a little bummed out right now :( I've taken it easy all day (havent even checked the expired domains list of today) and by the time I came to it and remembered I had been waiting on certain domains to become available, one had been scooped up voipapp.com before I could get to it. My fault completely for slacking as I knew it was coming available soon, I just didn't know which day. So back to my question,

Is there a specific amount of time allocated after a domain registration date is reached to the date it's available to the public?

I was under the impression is was 77 days, but in respect to voipapp.com I believe it was a little longer.

ps. Funny thing about voipapp.com is that it was registered with an @namespro.ca email address. Thought to share that since this is namepros.com ;)

Thanks Stub!

I recently found a tool to check the exact drop date on DomainScope from clicking on one on NP ads. (available with traffic tab > recently expired text field at)

However, it doesn't list an exact drop time.

It is not easy to exactly calculate when a domain will drop (Be released from the registry). Stub has the correct day ranges, however the first range of 45 days for Registrar Renewal is the maximum amount allowed for a .COM or .NET.

The domain lifecycle for a .COM/.NET is as follows:

At the day of expiration, the current registrar has UP TO 45 days to send in a delete command stating that the domain is not to be renewed. Most registrars send this in somewhere between 30 and 45 days, but waiting until the 45th day can be risky, if they wait until the 46th day they will get charged the renewal fee without an option for a refund.

Once the domain has been deleted, there is exactly 30 days while the domain is in Redemption Grace Period. This is when the registrar can send in a restore command (Which costs a considerable amount over a normal renewal). If the domain is restored at this point, it retains it's original create date.

If a domain is not restored, it enters the 5 day Pending Delete period, where the domain is essentially frozen and cannot be restored. There are rare cases where a domain has been pulled from pending delete (I do not have examples, but I believe it was due to a court order and was due to extenuating circumstances). Once the domain is in this period, it will be deleted by the registry and made available for registration again (The domain will get a new create date and lose it's age).

I have noticed that the 30 day Redemption Grace Period and 5 day Pending Delete period are closer to 31 days and 6 days, probably due to how Verisign processes their batches for domains. It is most likely due to a 0-based index that goes to day 30 (i.e. if I count to 30 but start at and count 0, then I have actually counted 31 distinct values).

I hope this helps out!

So. From what @JBubba is saying, it could be 81 or 82 days. 81 days would be the general rule and 82 days would be the exception.

Since a registrar can issue that delete command on the 30th day of expiration, the range is more like 68 - 84 days. Most registrars seem to issue the delete command around the 40th day of expiration, which puts it close to 78-82 days after expiration. This is just what I've noticed by researching a lot of expiring domains from different registrars.

I would say almost all of the registrars delete the domain on Day 45/46 because they want to complete the Pre-Release Auctions for the expiring domains. This would include GoDaddy and all the registrars who use the services of SnapNames/NameJet. Which covers pretty much all of the top 10+ registrars.
