Keep original registration date?

If I am purchasing a domain from someone who has had it for 15 years, what will happen when he transfers it to me?

I know history (may) have some positive effect on SEO.

Will the registration date be reset - is there a way to retain it?

as long as the domain isn't dropped back to the registry it will retain the original registration date. So, a xfer won't mess with it.
