Hello all,

I recently learned that 'someone' from China had acquired the domain name: 19850315.com

It turns out that is the date (in international format) of the very first .com registration. It seems this domain was acquired for 'collecting' purposes (and just in case I followed the lead).

I've only been involved in domains for a couple of weeks. Can anyone please shed some light if this is a common practice and if it is 'worth' to collect domains as a hobby based on important dates?

This one is indeed a novelty item.
But plenty of domainers are in fact domain collectors... so yes it is common practice.
These names usually have no resale value.
