Without reading and re-reading the stories I remember the guy got a $10k "thanks" from big G for alerting and giving it back.

A registrar showed the name as available and charged $10 when a user tried to buy it. User never had access to the domain. User was refunded $10 when registrar noticed the domain wasn't available. Happens a lot. No idea how this even made it into the news with sensational headlines.

Several years ago we heard about domain of Google . com has been expired and someone got it and they paid millions to retake it , does this story is true? https://www.cnet.com/news/what-did-google-pay-the-guy-who-briefly-owned-google-com/

It didn't expire, they just allowed it to be controlled from the Registrar they were creating. However, thanks for sharing, I didn't know about the similar Hotmail.co.uk and Passport.com debacles that are linked to from that article --> https://www.theregister.co.uk/2003/11/06/microsoft_forgets_to_renew_hotmail/

I can't believe that they manage to let these valuable things expire!!

In Italy Mediaset (that is a Silvio Berlusconi multi-billion company) lost domain Mediaset.com (that was the main domain) because they forgot to renew it and let it drop. Never got it back.

And yet they tried :xf.wink: The bottom line is, don't let a domain drop cause there is no guarantee you'll ever get it back even with strong, demonstrable TM rights.
