What is domaining to you?

Is it a job,hobby? I see some people that hit a nice little sum of money, while just doing this as a hobby. This is not my hobby, I plan to do this to gain cash to start my own business in the next 2-3 years. Im just wondering what domaining is to everyone... A lot of people have different views on it .

it is a hobby i enjoy very much, i make a dollar every now and then, i don't worry about making money from it though, i enjoy my job as a customer service rep.

Domaining is my life.

I plan to take it "full time" in June. Not sure how it'll go, but I figure I'll give it a shot. Worse case scenario is I'll pick up another job this summer...not a biggie for me personally.

There are many domainers who buy and sell domains as a full time job (especially on other domain forums).

I've only just started out, but it is only really a hobby for me - just a way to get my foot in another door (I have wide feet :p), and pick up a bit of funding for my other, main projects

Other than pure speculating in new extensions... You need alot of money to make alot of money nowadays in domaining. Everything is so expensive now compared to when I started back in 2000... I remember two letter dotcoms being had for XXXX during the crash. Really wish I had more money in domains back then...

Trust me, you can make a lot of money in the domain industry, if you work at it.

For me it is a retirement avocation and hobby. While I won't turn down a decent price for a name it isn't the main thing for me.

I enjoy the challenge of building a revenue stream through mini-sites, developed sites and parking with a sale every now and then. My current goal is build a portfolio which generates low $X,XXX/month. If I reach that goal I will set a new one and continue on. BTW I have done this beginning with an $800 site which was in bad need of reworking. Aside from the initial site I have never bought a name in the secondary market. Am looking forward to the day when I have set aside enough cash to go after a name which has traffic/backlinks etc. that I can develop.

I started small testing domaining about 2 years ago while working on another hobby business project. I started with 10 domains and kept tripling(approx) my investment every time I got into profit. Around 12 months ago, I slowly realised that domaining was becoming more profitable than my other business project and so I started shifting my focus towards domaining. My resources (time & money) are limited and so I don't know how long it will take but I am planning towards a full-time income with domaining.

Because domaining to me is a business, not a hobby I limit my emotional attachment to all of my domains and all of them have a price. I don't regret selling any domain that brings me a profit and am proud to boast of any domains that later bring my customers a better profit than me.

Just a thought for domaining as a full time venture:
Listing a domain for sale (5 minutes)
Communicating with a buyer and selling the domain(15 minutes)
Transferring a domain (10 minutes)
Unforseen delays (20 minutes)

If your making a small handful of good sales a week, what profitable activities does a full time domainer do with the rest of the time?
It is very easy to waste time and be inefficient.

Hobby, addiction, passion...probably in this order.

While is see domaining, developing sites in the near future as a possible business venture to get myself into, my real talent lies in evaluation, marketing and positioning domains. Lately, more than ever, i've come to the conclusion that without programming talent, its pretty difficult to create a profitable venture. The waiting times for programmers to actually get work done are exorbitant, the reliability leaves much to be desired and the success is heavily depending on the programmers talent to visualize the concept and build a functional site.

Before i go completely off target here, domaining is great, and with the right tools it's definitely a gold mine.
