What if you have a domain name and a fortune 500 company contact you and offer to buy the domain name for lets say $50,000 would you sell it? What if the company gross $2billion dollars a yr money is no problem for them would you decline $50G or try to milk them for a couple of millions? WHAT WOULD YOU DO????????????

....Er thats an easy one for me - 50K SELL :xf.love:
(unless it was a one word generic or country/city domain)

I've seen MASSIVE companies that won't even pay $20K for their company name :hehe:

Is this you John, or are we being hypothetical?

My rule is never accept the first offer.
Whether it's domains, house, car etc.

The only time that isn't true is if a big gun comes along & says i want 'that' for whatever reason, this is my one offer (if it's over what you believe worth to pretty much anyone) , bite his hand clean off
:imho: :sold:

i would just take a second offer i think. but someone offering you more than 20k is a rare case.

You dont get what you deserve you get what you negotiate! It all depends where I am at $$ wise at the time.

It depends on the domain. Is it worth $50K.... Maybe it's worth $100K. Being greedy can walk you right out of a deal that could of made you a nice ROI.

I try and trust my gut feeling at the time.

I have a name in .mobi which is owned by a multibillion dollar corp in .com. If I got offered 50k for the name, I would definitely sell it because:

1. It ain't worth close to 50k to anyone else
2. 50k is alot of money for me and could bring me a step closer to domaining full time (or at least cutting back a few hours, maybe a day a week)

For me, the risk/reward just wouldn't be worth pushing for even a 75k offer. Pretty easy to turn 50k into 75k domaining.. Alot easier than turning $0 into 50k :imho:

Have you considered asking for something like 50K plus 10K worth of stock? Then you can enjoy their success with your name!

I would only ask for more if:

- There are no possible alternatives
- They cannot get a good TM lawyer who for under 50K can get the name from you (you'd have to research trademark law here, but remember that someone actually doing business with a name can sometimes win over someone holding a name but not using it)
- They sell to the general public (there could be a 2 billion dollar company that makes space shuttles, but they're not going to need a strong internet presence.

If my domain name is property.com , then NO WAY I would sell for 50k

If I hand reg a domain for $8 such as welcometomyproperty.com , yes of course IMMEDIATELY I would sell for 50k.

So it depends on the domain.

I like the way you put that :)

I think someone else said it earlier, but if the end-user contacting you is likely to be the only end-user that would need/want the name, then perhaps conservatively counter-offer, but don't get greedy and lose the sale entirely.

alot of negotiation is about pressure. Who will wilt first.

Then to a marketing company may have a time frame to get a name and put in offers for several at the same time. Lets say the company tells the marketing compnay, "I need such an such name by 30 days") you will need to know what is going on.

The seller is motivated to. Maybe the seller is well financed and has no pressing needs for the money. But what if the seller is a month away from loosing his house as he is needing money for a balloon payment. Then the seller may accept the first offer.

My advice, look deeply into who they are and what is motivating them.

Here's how I like to buy my names: I make an offer, about 80% close to my actual budget, and see how the seller reacts. I don't like to haggle, personally. If the seller comes back with an huge amount, I just get turned off. But if the seller is reasonable and understands that my offer is pretty realistic, that turns into a sale.

For example, I was shopping for a LLL.com. I offer $5.5k (my initial offer) for a name that would've sold for not more than 6.5k in the reseller market. The seller replied with $500,000, something that just turned me off. Hence, no sale.
