Hi all!

I have found a name of a big company on a .com domain. The only thing is they already have a website and I am not sure if they would buy this one or not.

Hypothetic example so that you understand what I am saying :
Company name: Alex Financing
Their website: AlexFin.com
My website: AlexFinancing.com

Do you think I should buy it or not? Does it have any value to them?
Thank you!

should you buy it or what?

buy what, buy the website alexfinancing.com and try to sell to alexfin.com?

is that what you asking?

trying to sell a name to somebody who already has a website is uphill battle in itself

best for them to contact you in that circumstance

imo....

Yes, that is what I meant. Thank you for your opinion.

Did they own it at one point?

Did they try to buy it but found it was taken?

Or did they own it and decide to shorten their domain to what it currently is and if so I doubt they would want the longer version

Plus they are possibly the only potential customer for that domain and it would cost you a few renewals waiting in the hope they contact you to make an offer?

And if they don't?

Is it worth buying the domain to sit on?

Its like a big lake with just one fish in it

IMHO, if your example is accurate, they would file a UDRP saying you registered their name in bad faith and they'd successfully take the domain name off you. You wouldn't have a leg to stand on.

I'm not a lawyer, my advice is worth what you paid for it.

I think there are big chances that they will buy it and in the worst case scenario you will risk just 10$. I have done this in december with one company who used a name like 'alex group', but when they started around 10 years back they registered just 'alexgrp.com' and not the full ending 'group'. Noticing this, I have bought around 25 november a name like 'alexgroup' contact them the next day, and after a few days I have received the standard answer 'how much'. Even better, I have used netfirms and coupons to register that name, so I have paid around 1.5$, the bad part is that they didn't want to pay more than mid xxx, but still a nice ROI. So it's worth it, risking a few $, if you don't expect to sale it for lots of xxxx.

true - if you can get if for hand-prices and are prepared to settle for <=$1000, you can probably turn it over in a few days and its better than a slap in the face with a wet fish.

But if you get greedy, they will get the lawyers out and I don't think you'd stand a chance

Having words like 'group' 'financial' or others it's hard for somebody to have trademark rights if the pair word it's something general. For example, it's hard to have TM rights on names like 'securitygroup' 'orbitgroup' techgroup' and others, because there are at 10-20 companies having the same name or something closely related.

Right, but in his example, the first half was a proper name, which changes things

So the end result will depend very much in the exact two words he's talking about - which, of course, he wouldn't say.

But if he can get the name for hand-prices, then it's almost certainly worth a try.

Uniregistry: "alexfinancing.com is available for $8.88"

I agree. It's the kind of domain that has only one obvious end user. And in a UDRP it would be easy for the complainant to demonstrate that the OP bought the domain for the sole purpose of selling it to the company, otherwise he has no use for it.

PS: I would research the domain history. You may find out that it's been registered and dropped multiple times over the years. Which means you're not the first to try this game... and lose.

Would I buy this name ? No, unless it is a name that I could use.

if it was available to register, and they haven't registered it... they don't want it

I would leave it alone or email them about it's availability so they can register it themselves.

It cost you only a few bucks, why not? Sell them $50 to $1k . I am sure that is much less than go after udrp
