Anyone noticed what is happening at flippa appraisal? Last time I checked there were only 2 names listed for appraisal and now they have just 1.

Ok it hasn't been the best barometer for knowing the worth of a domain but any smart person can use it and get a fair idea how a domain could be seen by an end user. Agreed a lot of the appraisals are just by idiots looking to earn credits but you do some useful insight from many entries.

Do they technical have issues with it or are they trying to stop it. If they are stopping it, wouldn't it be better and more professional to announce that they are? Rather than what is happening now?

Sorry, Just realized the age of the post. Not sure why it popped up in my sights... But since i already typed this response....:guilty:

@photonmymind Giving new accounts 3-5 free listings...

Because then it incentivizes scammers to just make multiple shell accounts for the free instant credits. Welcome to the Internet, Are you new here? Scammers are always going to find a work around. 1 Listing per week per acct after submitting a number of appraisals(even the copy paste ones) is minor fodder compared to the solutions suggested.

I believe @FlippaDomains understands without the incentive the "truly genuine" appraisals would not float the appraisal section on its own. Even with the incentives there were still MANY domains receive ZERO appraisals every week, no just total crap names either. If anything, I'd suggest possibly chop it in half and give free credit incentives on a 2 week cycle instead of every week and go from 4 free listings to 2 free listings a month.

But I think It's all ultimately moving in the wrong direction. Earning Free listings are one of the features that keeps me aboard as well as others. We know without the $100+ premium upgrades our auctions get shuffled into the DomName Forrest with the hopes of interest(or more importantly bids) falling onto our name and getting a good sale.

I'd suggest enhancing the system instead of Nerfing it. Say Showing a thumbnail and/or tag lines on the search pages for all listings. Would make it more visually appealing and you can still offer Bold, Highlighted and Feature Paid Premium upgrades. Lets move forward and Seeing a DomName with say a Homemade Logo, Search Volume or a good tagline could drive more interest/sales to some of the names that would otherwise be orphaned and overlooked. Even trying it out for a month or two would demonstrate if it was useful and could always default back the the original Name, Bids, Price format.

Just my 2 cents.... well, kinda long so I'd go as far as to say 7 1/2 cents. :$::rolleyes:

LOL says the one with 8 posts!!!!!!
Anyways, this is an old thread and I won't get over this again. BTW It's the marketplace duty to verify accounts etc; every marketplace has the means to do that if they want..

Delayed, but as promised:
http://flippa.com/blog/changes-to-flippas-domain-appraisals-tool/

I'm editing my comments to all of your replies, to post after the jump.

@FlippaDomains said in a different thread last December that they would be removing the appraisal incentive. It is odd that it took this long and they chose not to announce the change on their web site.

There was exactly 0 value in their appraisals because no one was appraising to actually add value/input to the system.. Everyone was just doing it for the free credits. I hope that they are killing it off as that would mean less crappy names listed in auctions because everyone that was listing with their free flippa credits will now stop and think twice before listing because they will actually have to pay for the listing..

At moment, we're working on some really big things, as such this has been pushed down the list for now. I am interested in keeping the discussion going.

My personal feelings on it are that if it's crowd driven, then everyone should be allowed to submit inventory. I would venture to estimate that the vast number of those that benefit from this tool are seeking validation from others: whether they should maintain ownership, sell (and if so for how much), or any other thoughts (uses, ideas, etc) they never thought they could use the domain for. That is useful.

Limiting appraisals to a select pool of inventory turns a lot of people off -- mostly beginners looking for some guidance. It also doesn't solve the problem of a small pool of those (much fewer than we used to have) who game the system to gain credits.

If you don't mind me asking; who does make decisions there? And how long does it take for whoever is in charge to make a common sense based decision?

It allows to put my domain out and seek advice. This is of course the whole point, but the question is how this is achieved. If you get in a week 3 spammers just copy pasting exactly same answer to everybody, then the value is rather limited.

But we lose far greater in listing fees than we gain in success fees. At this moment, the tool is an imperfect product on our site that > 50% of the members think is useful. So we're keeping it. Our product team really can't spend much more time on it than that at moment, though everything mentioned in this thread is all valid and suggestive of a better way to roll with it...

Of course it contributes to the poor inventory.

Also, me as a newbie sold domain on flippa with free listing and if I hadnt have it (free listing), I woludnt listed domain

I think that everyone for free listing can make some simple job whihc everybody can do, like social media promotion or contact end users for some domains listed on flippa. For example, someone buy flippa promotion for 349$ and he also get a 20 or more random promotion from flippa sellers, a seller who want free listing need to contact 20 end users and tell them about some domain at auction or promote via his social media and so on. And for appraisal tool. I think it would be great if only experienced sellers can do it (like only members who have 50 sales) and for return they get free email promote or twiter promote and free listing. What do you think about that idea?

I think the appraisal section has a place, and I see from Flippa's side how it is useful in driving engagement. I think it could be improved by highlighting a users credentials a little further - i.e how many sales they've made, how long have they been registered, how many of their appraisals came close to the final selling price etc.

It's never going be perfect, but no appraisal service is. I personally don't have an interest in using it, but I wouldn't take it away from those who do. It makes people feel involved and feel like they're contributing, and that generates the kind of enthusiasm that motivates newcomers to learn.

And second, an algorithm to rank members based on their correct estimation should be done. It can be something simple, like rank better those members who hit the median, but will definitely make some abusers who do a copy paste string and put always a 5000$ value reconsider.

If your name is good then it will sell Period.

I am still not truly convinced that Flippa is a better place than Bido for domains.

How about appraise it and find me the buyer?

Your own custom logo* $120 value

You guys create the logo? And can people keep the logo for themselves and if the domain doesn't sell?

The thing I'm really confused about is why people would do appraisals for the sole purpose of getting free listings? I might be missing something here (like some sort of game theory) but surely the time and effort to find a domain, appraise domains and then list a domain isn't worth it if you don't think you'll make a profit from $9, especially if you can only do one a week?

It should keep some incentive but only members with selling and buying experience should be allowed to give their input in the Domain Appraisal system.
For example: To avoid new spammers they can introduce a rule that the members with minimum $100 transaction can provide their input in the Domain Appraisal system..

I think the appraisals tool is useful but the free credits are not. I've read countless articles over the years about Flippa's business mantra of having 'barrier to entry' fees to keep the junk out, yet here we are with a system that removes that barrier.

If you don't intend to change the system, maybe you could add a search filter to define whether a listing used 'paid' or 'free' credits. Anybody with the time to look for a needle in a haystack can jump into the free section.

But I think It's all ultimately moving in the wrong direction. Earning Free listings are one of the features that keeps me aboard as well as others. In light of the recent changes to discontinue unlimited free relisting and enact a 'one-free-relist' allotment for domain auctions, we decided this was next.

I hope that they are killing it off as that would mean less crappy names listed in auctions because everyone that was listing with their free flippa credits will now stop and think twice before listing because they will actually have to pay for the listing..

My take on this: if an auction is listed and goes on a merry-go-round, never selling, then either it's (a) priced too high, (b) is not being seen by the right buyers, or (c) shouldn't be up for auction, but rather in the seller's Flippa Portfolio to await offers (free, BTW).

We're working on (a) by way of Account Management, mentioned below;
and we're working on (b) by way of visibility and exposure overhauls, also mentioned below.

For you guys, @silgro12 + @silver_hawk4

Also, me as a newbie sold domain on flippa with free listing and if I hadnt have it (free listing), I woludnt listed domain

I understand that it's not "just $9" at stake. You want to be sure of a sale. See below for how to reach out to us ahead of time so we can assist.

Our priority is now full-steam improving our search and layout, which will cascade some needed change in regards to our premium / exposure package. The changes are going to be a shift away from where we're at now, with far greater outcomes for both buyers and sellers.

Many still find this tool useful; engagement is mostly "new" account holders, and something tells me that it's many beginners in this space. We have a vast opportunity to help new buyers find what they are looking for, as well as to help educate or at least steer new sellers in the right direction.

And second, an algorithm to rank members based on their correct estimation should be done. It can be something simple, like rank better those members who hit the median, but will definitely make some abusers who do a copy paste string and put always a 5000$ value reconsider.

I love this idea in theory, but am terrified it would lead to a gambling/gamification effect that would become a breeding ground for people to influence auctions.

I think these ideas are kinda cool, but I do not foresee them implemented into Flippa's platform.

How about appraise it and find me the buyer?

Domain Account Managers. They now exist (I used to lead a Team of 1 when interacting with all of you) but we are hiring more. Primary objective is to help gauge whether your asset is a good fit for an auction, paid visibility or brokerage.

Domain Holdings are best in the game at this (appraising and finding a buyer). We have been working very closely with their awesome team since we acquired them in May.

Reach out to us. We want to work with you.

Are we there yet?
