What happened to Afternic Bazaar?

Last year I stumbled across Afternic's Bazaar. There were usually several hundred domains being sold in a 7-day declining price format. A great place to look for bargains, and sell "I loved you once, but I'm not going to renew you" type of domains.

Earlier this year Afternic removed the "Bazaar" link from the front page, you have to go in via the Buy or Sell links. The listings have been reduced and reduced. Bazaar is now showing only 8 domains for sale.

What's happened to this once fun place to bargain hunt? Does anyone from Afternic post on NP? I would love to hear your take on this. Oh, well the new Domaining.com "Expired Domains" feature looks interesting...

I enjoyed browsing it in the past as well. It's sad to see such a unique auction system not being used... I thought the reverse auction idea and Afternic platform for it were genius.

They used to accept adult domains, too... why did they pull it? It's not like refusing to sell an adult domain will stop the same oof 'em elsewhere :(

I have mentioned it in the past. There should be a link for it on the front page at Afternic. As it stands its three clicks to get there if you even know its there. :td:

If you really think about it, the commission needs to be high for the site or it wouldn't be worth it at all.

If a domain sells for $10, ExpiringDomains.com will get $3. I think a lot will sell in that range. Currently most domains would end up just dropping, so you have to decide if the $7 is better then nothing (70/30).

The lowest Domaining.com sells them for is $30. It starts at $100 and drops $10 a day for 7 days.

I wish the Afternic Bazaar got more interest, I love the idea of reverse auctions and there used to be some good bargains.

My bad! I saw the $10 and just figured.. lol

I don't see this site doing very well!

Basically, the "buyer" will have to pay about $40 for the cheapest domain... I can't wait to see what's listed 8-X

Nothing is fixed, we should be testing until we find something that works well for most.
It's possible we decrease the minimum sale price from $30 to $20.

...

I really want this marketplace be seen as the last chance to sell a name you did not succeed to sell and that you decided to let drop. Doing this and only listing expiring domains we are not competing with any existing service.

...

Regarding the 30% sale commission in fact Snap and Jet have higher commissions.
Think we are speaking about small amounts where payments cost are high in comparison.
Just think about the marketing cost to attract sellers and buyers:
Do you think a registrar may accept to advertise your service if they are going to earn few percents of possible sales?
Never! The minimum to discuss should be around 10%, and now think the service must also be marketed to buyers...
The marketing cost a lot of money and without that a service never land off.
As my friend Yofie say, think that in one hand you have a domain that should be dropped with no income and in the other the possibility to get the lion part of the sale.

When someone contact you about buying one of your domain names, do you consider that make a 30% benefice is too much, or in fact it's really the minimum?

I really hope it works, this new expiring domains site. Seems to me to be an untapped niche. I've got a drawer full of my early regs coming up for renewal so I'll be testing it out soon. There may also be a need for a different site/format for the under $30 price range, which the vast majority of expiring names will no doubt fall into.

Too bad about Afternic bazaar. It was a nice "alternative" low-end sales format.

btw, just for kicks, I started a reverse auction yesterday for a couple names (see my sig). I like the format but it may be too complicated. We'll see...

All the sales in ExpiringDomains.com have been done at $80 and $90 until now.
Let see if there are sale at $30 confirming the need to maybe allow lower prices.

It would be informative to know which ones have sold. Do you list them anywhere?

I signed up in the past week or two , But am still wondering How you see the names for sale in the first place. Are they all going to Premium Members still and not making it to Regular Members yet ?

This is what I am also thinking. It's usually the premium mode from Afternic.

Hi Mark,

I can see the names for sale and I'm not a Premium member. You need two clicks from the front page to see them (shades of Afternic Bazaar again..). On Domaining's front page, hit Expiring Domains. When you get to that page, hit Buy Domains from the left hand menu.

There's some OK names, but the price should maybe start at lower than $90.

It's easier now, simply go to ExpiringDomains.com to see the listing of expiring names for sale.

Just a note to say that now we also accept the submission of domains with hyphens.
