Okay, just out of curiousity... when you all first got into selling/trading domain names what did you expect? To be millionaires? To be able to buy a pepsi?

And how has that worked out for ya now?

I'm looking to turn a profit. This is first a hobby for me and then a business venture. I don't have unrealistic goals of millions, but hoping at least for thousands.

What did you expect from selling domains?

Money. Satisfaction of doing something Iam good at. What else does a man need.

Personally just to make a decent profit and HOPEFULLY make enough money to give up work (have other projects on the go as well)

I expected to make a profit (maybe up to $500/mo) but I learned hard and fast that that is too hard to do. I simply "develop" domains with mini sites and article sites at this point and get traffic in order to make money form affiliate links and adsense ads. ALthough it's not making me much money, it's making me more than selling domains ever did.

I tried to buy/reg/sell Domains full time but the money was never steady, some months I would match what I was making in my previous real world job and some months not. Its kinda hard to pay the bills when you cant make steady sales/income.

I tried this for about 3 years and managed to hang in there but recently I returned to work off line and now just do Domains as a hobby and have no real hopes in making much these days.

I got into it when I ran into some money problems. I though I could make some cash. I was wrong lol. Still awhile from cutting even but things look better ahead.

If you get on the game just in the hope of making millions $$$ fast and easy you will be disappointed.
Your best bet is to develop or at least park your names to cover the registration fee.
I register almost every day but seldom sell. Many of my names are not for sale (I use them for web projects) and those that I won't sell then I'll develop. I just don't have the time to develop them all.
Good names are running out fast (well most are gone, fortunately there are some drops) so if you need (or will need) domain names better register them today while they are still available. Also, value of domain names is bound to increase over time.

Thats a great answer
:tu:

I collected sports cards when i was 12 till 30 and always bought as an investment/hobby knowing i could resell them and make money.(hopefully a profit) I went threw the beanie baby days and made big money on them during which time i came across the .com era. It all a started with mall.com then i was hooked, its like collecting anything its addictive some continue with the hopes of success/profit and some give up after many years without. But one thing i notice is that when i was collecting baseball cards i would laugh when my friends would trade me a Nolan Ryan for Fernando Valenzuala or a Fred Lynn, (for the quick turn around) instead of the long haul. Point is, its about what you do with the hobby/business and choices you make to succeed. Some are right and some are wrong you just hope you make more right choices then wrong and you`ll come out a head.

(Nolan Ryan`s rookie card is $600 to $1,000 now and peaked at $1,500,
Fred Lynn is $30 to $50 and peaked at $75
Fernando Valenzuala is $10 to $20 and peaked at $25)

Today i have 17 Nolan Ryan rookies, and still holding them, this game (.com) takes time.
Its a gamble a game a business and a hobby

Do you familiar with feelings, when you suddenly hitting jackpot in the casino?
When you sell domain at nice price you are having aproximately same feelings. :)
I think this is what keeping most of us busy in domain business. IMHO
