What determines the price of a domain??

I have asked myself the question, and got some answer. I think when we purchase a domain we query the following factors:-

1. Domain name keyword popularity.
2. Length of the domain.
3. tld of the domain.
4. pagerank of the domain.
5. Alexa traffic rank of the domain.
6. How old it is?

As, I am a newbie domainer and have not so much experience. Please help me to find other deciding factor for the domain name price. It will help many domainers.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

type-in traffic and backlinks are also important factors to consider.

The most important thing not mentioned is the field the domain relates to, and how highly targeted the term is.

A niche term in a high paying field like Insurance, Financial, Mortgage, etc. is worth more than a Category Killer in a field that does not make the owner that much money.

Mortgage companies can makes tens of thousands from one client. How much does someone who sells key chains make from 1 sale? There is a reason some terms pay $30+ for clicks and others pay $0.05

I would add:

- End user potential...how attractive will the name be to an end-user; and

- How easily you can build a content site for that domain name...I call this "Obviousness." Specifically, I mean how well an average person could hear the name and immediately assume what kind of website it is.

Both are excellent points. If you want to make end user sales you need domains an end user would want.

In general that means some kind of clear use. Does the domain name convey what a visitor can expect to find?

As mentioned above,
Marketability: what is the value / demand of the niche. How deep or wide is a market being targeted.

Others:
Memorability

Domain Makeup: How many words, hyphenated or not, numbers in the domain, acronym, abbreviation or word, how many words in the domain.

This is not a deciding factor. Many of the premium names have been registered 10-15 years ago.

To a domain name age can be like a fine wine.

If a premium domain is also 13 years old then it certainly doesn't hurt resale value, at the same like if CreditCards.com dropped tomorrow and had a 2009 creation date, it would not sell for less because of that.

At the same time a really bad domain can't be saved just by age alone.

To most end users age is completely irrelevant.

I think sales of similar domain names determine the price of a domain name.

How would an end user know about the domain sales? It's not a deciding factor at all.

The happy medium between buyer and seller at that moment and time.

Go to Google, type in "Domain Sales History". There is a site I really like that can be searched for comps.
