So, I'm browsing through the for sale sections the other day and I saw that a lot of people are begrudgingly selling their names because they are "saving up for a new project". Realizing that there is no way someone would just say that in order to have an excuse for why they are selling and thereby somehow pump their domains' values, I ask: What are all these projects?

They sound truly exciting if people are willing to part with names they otherwise love in order to start them.

I want to be in on one of these projects!

It just simply means they need money :D

Agreed. Its so funny because I am so much more trusting of those who just figure out a fair price that should attract a fair sale for both sides. Excuses that have nothing to do with the names seem so thin - don;t get me wrong, I'm not saying there is anything unethical or somehow wrong about doing that, but I just think it backfires.

I think it's supposed to be an answer to: "if your domain is so good, why are you selling it?"

I have like 5 projects that I am about to start :) Yeah its the new way instead of maxing my credit cards and everything. I will sell something of value to get the cash flow going.

I've wasted over $2,000 in the last 2 months on projects. Bad word in my book.

I think this is right on, though I have actually begun developing several of my domain names. Affiliate marketing has become pretty profitable lately!

actually it is kind of unethical, lying is always unethical...
same goes when people say 'well i had plans for this domain, but if you offer good money..." when someone inquires about a name which you actually bought exactly for resale in the first place...

projects

It may be an excuse, unnecessary explanation, whatever, but who cares? The price is important for buyers.

Anyway, it's a fact that most people start (or intend to start) more projects that they are able to finish (or start). Me too.

I don't see it as a big deal. All that matters to me when buying/selling is name, price, and reputation. Whatever else is dicta.

I agree with that - someone could say "buy this really crappy domain because I want to go to the pub for a few pints" and if its a good price, I'll buy it.

That said, when I see the "project" line, it gives me the immediate impression that the person is insecure about the domain's value. That, in my mind, deflates what might be the real value.

But, if there is enough interest in this topic, I'll turn it into a project...however, that will require money, so does anyone want to buy some good LLLLLNN.biz names??

What does it matter why someone is selling a name? Many people do have projects they set off to do but get sidetracked for one reason or another. I had stuff I had planned for a bunch of things but time & other circumstances end up delaying or shelving things. So sometimes you just realize that it is better to sell off some of your ideas in a sense & move on to which projects or such are more important to launch.

As far as it being unethical, that is ridiculous. If someone wants to sell for whatever reason it is their right. How do you know they wanted to resell all along? You don't......

I've seen alot more people using that excuse than usual lately as well... Quite honestly, I think some of the people using this excuse have given up on the domain name market (recession fears) or that particular domain segment and are using "saving up for a new project" as an excuse that sounds a whole lot better than telling prospective buyers that they're scared about the future!

I shouldn't really talk though... I've been using this excuse myself lately. :D

But I actually am "saving up for a new project"...

Spent the last couple weeks registering myself (incorporating) as a business, purchasing custom logo, web design, and a top of the line dedicated server, and am now shopping for a new laptop, desktop, and office equipment + furniture. Gotta love the tax write-offs businesses get

Well some people seriously need money for projects and some just use it as an excuse to sell their domains.

But I don't think most of the people will buy that particular domain name so that the guy selling it can get started with his project.

Nor do I lol. I think there's a few domainers around who'd be more inclined to give you a lower offer if they felt you were cash strapped...

I only use the excuse myself when people ask me why I'm no longer buying domains :)
