Ok.
I bought a domain from Globat last year - STUPID THING TO DO - and now I want it transferred elsewhere but they won't give me the AuthCode...

I emailed them asking for it and they replied with.

Dear XXXX,

Thank you for contacting Globat.com.

Please verify your request by providing the last four digit of your credit card also as per checking you have unpaid invoice amounting to $8.99. Please be reminded that it is for the renewal of your domain and you need it for transferring. Please settle this and verify us then afterwards we will send you the auth code.

Should you have any further billing questions, please do not hesitate to email us at [email protected].

Regards,

Are these people asking me to pay the renewal and THEN they'll give me the AuthCode? I'm going to go insane.

Does anyone know how I can handle this?

What date does it actually expire ? Sounds like to me they won't release due to funds owed - Was it set to auto-renew or anything ?.

The domain expires on the 27th of July.
There isn't really an option to turn off auto-renew.

Each registrar has his own rules regarding when they renew a domain ... many renew it on the expiry date (eg. Godaddy) , others renew it 15 days in advance (eg. Yahoo) , etc ...

also different registrars might have different time limits before expiration that they would allow a transfer out ...

if you renew the domain with them and then transfer out ... the purchased registration term will "travel" with the domain , since the reg term is "recorded" in your name on registry level , not on registrar level ... therefore , if you renew it , expdate will be 27/07/08 ... and if you still want to transfer it to another registrar (that adds a year for transfers , as most do) it will add a year on top of that reg term ... therefore , when you receive it in the new registrar , the expdate will be 27/07/09 ... therefore , it would depend on whether you are planning to keep the domain up to that date , spend money on it right now or not , stay with the current registrar or not , etc ...

if you renew it with them, you won't lose anything, the renew plus the transfer will
give you two years extended.

Yeah, the trouble is however, I don't have a credit card.
The domain was originally registered for me by a friend who has disappeared offline.

So here I have this domain, in need of renewing. And I'm not even sure if they're gonna give me the AuthCode even IF I do pay them.

Before the renewal date comes you can choose whether you want to keep your domain name or not. However, if you want to transfer to a different domain registrar, you will need to do this at least forty days before the renewal date, as we can cannot transfer domains within 40 days of your renewal date.
http://www.domainsarefree.com/faq/billing-renewal-fee-domain-names.html

You said your domain expires on 27th July, reading their FAQ they don't allow transfers within 40 days of renewal.

Your only option it seems is to renew it somehow. Ask a friend or family member and use their credit card. Maybe that will work.

Good luck!

Crappy @$$ policy... Sorry to hear that - and "shennanigans!" on Globat.

If you can find somebody with a CC who has an account at Globat, you could push the name to his account and then he could add one more year and push it back.

I agree that their policy about 40 days is BS.
