Yep I have had a great idea. The stock exchange would list only
high quality .com domains. People with prime names would
list their name on the exchange and then each name would be divided
into 100 shares. Punters could then bid for the 100 shares say bid for 5 shares at $20, while someone else bids say $30 for 5 shares the price
of the 100 shares will be set at the minimum to clear the market ie sell all
100 shares. The holder of the domain should get a realistic market
price but will not do so well if the sale flops but might do very well if demand is high.

The domain holder would the get the cash on the 100 shares less a 10% handling fee to the exchange. Thereafter each week people can buy and sell their shares with the exchange marking up prices if buyers exceed seller and marking down prices if sellers exceed buyer in the share. The exchange taking a 10% commission from both buyer and seller of shares.

A domain could be taken over if anyone bids for all 100 shares (or the remaining part thereof) at a 30% premium to the weekly prevailing price and then own the domain outright so it can be delisted from the exchange.

Anyone got the programmng skills to set this up then pm me!

Implementing it would be difficult IMHO but it's an idea. I don't know that I'm a fan of it, though.

Really Great!
It is possible but I think there are difficulties to overcome!
Anyway it a very good idea!

It won't work. A stock has an intrinsic value based on the companies performance. On the other hand, a domain name isn't supported by any business at all - it's purely speculative.

I would liken domain names to be more like property - think along that line ;)

hold your horses your seeing into the future,
domain holders will command empires with their fleet and will be indistructables
carried from one family warrior clan to the another, a stock exchange will only give commoners
knowlegde to this esoteric clandestine operation underway today.so its no go
over and out

It could work! I had a similar idea last year for selling ownership shares of domains, sketched out a few notes on it and bought the name for the business (nameshares.com). There are a few issued that would need to be worked out, like the price of setting a target price that the name would be sold at before selling shares in the name. Also, what the process would be for receiving and considering offers on the name from potential buyers. So in a way its like investors betting that the name will eventually sell for the target price so they can profit from their partial ownership. There are other issues too, like parking, udrp, etc.

While it would be great for small investors to own a piece of a great name, I'm wondering if owners of prime names would even have any reason to bother with a system like this. That would probably be the main challenge -- getting names to be split. It might be that the management would be the ones to go out and aquire premium names to bring into the sytem.

If you would like to get together and compare notes sometime, drop me a PM. I may be up for partnering on a venture like this, especially if we could get programmers to assist in the development.

I think with some adjustments it would work. It would be a great way to sell high priced domains.

The seller gets what he wants: money right now
The buyers get: a piece of the action with profit potential.

The parking page income would need to be like dividends and given to all the shareholders.

a domain would be offered up for sale, say for $20,000, meaning there are 1,000 shares avaliable at $20 each. people buy what they want, if there are not many buyers price falls (domain is probobly overpriced)

Now the 1,000 new owners decide what to do with the domain, they all become members of a domain board. Majority rules. They can now all invest extra money to put up a working website. so now they not only own just the domain, but a real business.

I am sure 1,000 people could be found to buy a great domain and hope to make it a profit machine. $100 per person would give 100k of working capital. Who wouldnt want to own 1/1000th of the next big thing?

First off in any developed country in the world you have to be licensed to sell shares in anything SO In the US you would have to comply With Federal and State securities laws.

Secondly what is some one buying into? A piece of property is tangible and when they have people buy shares that is a REIT REAL ESTATE INVESTMENT TRUST is a regulated Security.

THIRD what interest would say someone like Chris Chena have in sellign shares in Paraguay.com ? He already bought it if he needed a partner he would have gotten one for the purchase.

Fourth Unless It was a major name who would want to buy a fraction of ownership in I got somedotcom com?

THis idea is far from sound No offense I am an ideas person and all for them but this is not sound IMO

Yeah - I think a lot of us have thought of doing something in this Area before , and It really would depend on the Main Players/Management to Guide all decisions moneywise. Just like any Stock Venture though - there would still be a lot of risk. I do think it would be a good idea on a smaller level though (Possibly a NP$ Domain "Reg team" like the other teams in the past ?). I've tried to get a NP$ Reg Team together before - But most lost interest too Quickly.

I like the Idea though - :tu:

players are still dev there nests and dont want to disturb the equalibrium right now
there alot more than meets the eye in this world of domains

ps:: did you know that it cost up to 15,000 per month to advertize there on the front page...
