I have perusing the board now for a bit and see a lot of suggestions to develop domains, ie throw up a simple 1 page site or something, or even develop it further.
My question is how does that make you money? If you sell a domain that is obvious, if you cash park that is clear but in what way do you generate revenue if you build some site up? My first thought was advertising banners but I can't imagine getting someone to pay for that unless you have an unbelievably great domain and in that case I would try to sell it.

Thanks for any and all thoughts!

Just to add a bit more, you can put up a 1 page site and put AdSense on it, or a link for an affilliate program that is related to the domain, but I think most people talk about developing a site that is a real site. I mean one with 5-20 pages or more, things that people will find interesting or useful.

But where an average site owner generally has something the publish for people to use, most domainers publish a site to get advertising money. This tends to cause people to create sites that are pretty bad in quality. Now this may seem dumb, but if your site content can attract people, but the site is not good (bad design, poor content, etc. )then the visitors are going to leave right away. I hate to say it, but you want them to leave, by clicking on one of your ads.

Some of our best money-makers are bad sites with lots of content. Many people come, don't like what they see, and click on ads that ARE what they want. I'm not proud of these sites, but I am not going to take them down. I have other sites that I am proud of but they generally don't make as much because people like them more and they spend time looking around and when they leave they may or may not click on an ad. Sometimes they leave our site on one of the non-advertising links, which is what a "real" site will have along with the ads.

The main reason you build a site is because most parking services do not allow you to do anything to get more traffic to your domain. When you build a site, you can do all kinds of things to get traffic, including link exchanges, search engine optimization, and paid ads to bring people to your site.

rep added, chris!
i guess one way to look at it is your "bad" sites subsidize the good work you do in your "good" sites. which themselves are also long term keepers (PR, etc) anyway.
