Got an e-mail from someone today asking me to stop spamming him. The e-mail contained a veiled threat of legal action. I don't spam anyone and in fact I don't even use that particular domain name to send e-mail.

Anyone else run into a similar situation. Like to be somewhat helpful to the guy sending me the e-mail. Anything I can suggest to him?

This is extremely common. The easiest thing to do on the net is to set a false "from" address for email. It is difficult to deal with, so just cooperate as best you can and explain the situation. One of my favorite comments is to say that I could send mail from "[email protected]" by simply changing the from address, and then ask them if they received such a message would they really believe it was from the President. Be polite and helpful since a lot of the time the spammer may be doing this to damage your good name. If you upset the "spamee" then the spammer has partially accomplished his purpose.

good luck,
Marc

It sucks, sometimes you just have to wait it out because a worm has propagated 100x fold through vulnerable machines, using email addresses from each machine's contact list.

some good info (vintage 2004) about dealing with this sort of thing here ->

and also here -> http://secondwheel.googlepages.com/backscatter

more recently, schemes such as SPF have been adopted to help mitigate effects of forged email - the effectiveness of SPF is still being debated, but its use is becoming more widespread. ->

Also - a good source of info for learning about email issues in general is the emaildiscussions.com forum ... (run by a domainer - not sure if Edwin ever posts on here NP...)
