Let's say you own a .tv domain for a generic product or service. It's not a city name (eg boston.tv). What are some ways to monetize the site? Visitors will expect it to be media oriented because of the .tv extension. Can one make money through affiliate subscriptions? Any other ways?

Due to the media based content you mention, proper development of .TV requires significantly greater investment than let's say a text based .COM site. Producing professional video content is EXPENSIVE and RESOURCE intensive. :$:

According to my rough data, far less than 1% of registered domains are profitable. I think you could even go as far to say that less than 1% of developed sites are profitable. That means you're facing significant challenges in the .TV sector where visitors expect not only a unique, rewarding, and entertaining visit, but also one with video.

In my view, the easiest way to make money on any TLD is via a subscription based model. The basic model provides two types of content, free and premium. You attract visitors via your free content and make money by converting them to premium customers with recurring monthly subscriptions. The greatest example that I can think of is FreeCreditReport.com. Estibot and Freshdrop are examples also worth studying.

There are several ways to implement this model but the bottom line is you need to have valuable desirable content (or content of perceived value) to entice the customer into subscribing. Think of the Internet as a GIGANTIC lake and all of its users as glorious trout. We always care for our fish just like a fisherman who practices catch-and-release, only our fish are released only after pressing the cancellation button. :)

So now you ask, "how do I get my site"? Ok, you have two basic choices. Build the site yourself or pay others to build the site. If you have the basic skills like css, php, mysql, html, photoshop, javascript, etc., etc (and with .TV you can throw in video production and editing), then you're ready to build a site yourself in let's say 250 to 500 hours. If you're going to outsource the bulk of this work, you should be prepared to pay a minimum or $20/Hr which works out to around $5K to $10K for a very basic site (less video content) capable of producing income under this model. These numbers are VERY rough and at the extreme low end.

Of course, if you ever discover an easy repeatable model for paying a renewal (and making a few bucks to boot) with little or no investment, you will have found the holy grail of domaining. IMO.
