Yes, I am a newbie. I guess some of the ways you can make money with your domain names overlap and this confuses me. :) Anyway, I figured I would take a stab and write down my newbie perspective so the veterans can correct me.

"Shaveable Revenue"

Parking companies - you sign up with a company that finds advertisers and has software that will generate webpages with ad on your domain and you get paid when someone clicks on the ads. You don't control the webpages so you have to trust their page stats aka indirect stats. This generally pays the least but pretty much anyone can join. Until recently, you didn't have to generate any content for the webpages but now companies like Noomle and WhyPark let you add your own content but they still control the webpages. People will steal your content and use it/resell it.

Indirect affiliate - it is similar to parking but you control the webpages so you can have some direct stats. You sign up with a company that finds advertisers that will pay you either just per click/action or a percentage of what the site visitor buys. You can confirm how many visitors click but you don't
know what/how much they buy. Not everyone can join but the pay is better. The better the content you have, the better your search engine ranking, visitor counts and probably revenue. You may or may not know what ads are displayed on your pages. People will steal your content and use it/resell it.

Direct affiliate - you sign up directly with a company to place ads on your site. There is no middleman so you make more money than being an indirect affiliate but you have to do more work and have a more established website with stronger traffic to be a direct affiliate. You are paid either just per click/action or a percentage of what the site visitor buys. You can confirm how many visitors click but you don't know what/how much they buy. Fewer can join but the pay is better than being indirect. The better the content you have, the better your search engine ranking, visitor counts and probably revenue. You know exactly what ads are displayed on your pages. People will steal your content and use it/resell it.

"Not Shaveable/Limited Shaveablity"

Indirect ads - an intermediate company finds advertisers for you and takes their cut. You are paid by the size of the ad not by how many vistors or clicks. Usually your website has to be well known to do this. You know how many visitors/clicks happen on your pages but not what they buy. If there is an
increasing number of visitors/click you can try and raise rates. If decreasing, you'll either get a lower rate or dropped. You probably will have compelling content vs just displaying a bunch of ads. People will steal your content and use it/resell it.

Direct ads - you and the advertiser directly negotiate a set payment so you should get paid more. You are paid by the size of the ad not by how many vistors or clicks. Usually your website has to be very well known to do this. You know how many visitors/clicks happen on your pages but not what they buy. If there is an increasing number of visitors/click you can try and raise rates. If decreasing, you'll either get a lower rate or dropped. You probably will have compelling content vs just displaying a bunch of ads. People will steal your content and use it/resell it.

Indirect sales - visitors buy from your site, pass the sale to another company that warehouses and (drop)ships the items. You know exactly how much the visitor buys but maybe not what they return. If a customer uses a stolen credit card/paypal, you have headaches. While compelling content will help, you
can just sell stuff.

Direct sales - visitors buy from your site, you direct ship the items. You know exactly what is bought and returned. If a customer uses a stolen credit card/paypal, you have headaches. While compelling content will help, you can just sell stuff.

Subscriptions or pay per item to your very compelling content. If a customer uses a stolen credit card/paypal, you have headaches. People will steal your content and use it/resell it.

Selling just the domain name
Selling a developed site

Leasing your domain name/website

i think you copy-pasted those from some certain websites. still, those are good way to learn the ropes, but it's like reading a textbook. yaawn... go out there, make some mistakes, learn your lesson, then you'll be newbie no more...

the world is so much beautiful than seeing it from the eyes of a textbook...

LOL, being accused of plagiarism is not the reply I was expecting. (I just ran my post through a couple of plagiarism sites and came up clean) How efficient is it to reinvent the wheel? And how do you know I haven't already made any mistakes? :)

Because your first post would contradict that!

Well, since no one is disagreeing with my outline of Web Monetization Types, I guess I haven't made any mistakes yet. :)

Seriously, the definition of a newbie is someone who has only thought about doing something but not actually tried anything yet?
