Want to buy soon-to-be expiring domain but unsure of path to take

There is a domain which expires in late-August and I would love to have. I would even pay up to $100 at a domain auction, but want to get it for a less if possible. Assuming the owner doesn't renew it, I am unsure of the best path to try to drop-catch it. I register all my domains with Porkbun, but would register this one wherever I need to so I can get it, and transfer to Porkbun later. My intent is to build a side-hustle bootstrap site around this domain that may be profitable in a few years.

The domain is registered with ENOM. I have heard that ENOM sends all their expired domains to GoDaddy and I am hesitate to use a GoDaddy drop-catch service because GoDaddy has such a bad reputation at, well, everything.

Is it possible to register with enomcentral and place a drop-catch order there, or should I look at Tucows since it appears they own ENOM?

Or should I register with NameJet and Dropcatch and place an order in both places? If I place an order with NameJet/Dropcatch would I create an auction situation since I am in effect "bidding" against myself?

I've never done drop-catch before so just seeking advice.

If the domain is registered at enom, I believe you're correct about it reaching GoDaddy expired auctions.

Somewhere between day 30 and day 45 of it being expired and not renewed, you'll see the domain at GoDaddy auction. The minimum bid is $25 but depending on the new sometimes a bid can set off other buyers. If nobody bids the domain will be available for $50, and it will drop in price every 24 hours from 50 to 40 to 30 to 11 then to $5... + Renewal fee. If nobody buys it when it's $5 for 24 hours, then you'll have to wait for the domain to be expired for about 75 days before the domain official drops and is available to be caught.

You are mixing up expiring and dropping. If the name enters redemption period or pending delete (you will see that in the whois) you need a drop catcher (usually if you order it on snapnames and dropcatch one of them will catch it)

However, before that period it might go to auction, at that point only that one auction house (namejet/sn, dropcatch pre release, godaddy expired etc) has access to it.

Don't get your hopes up please, most domains auto renew on the date they expire.

Join many drop-catching services, such as NameJet, DropCatch, and Snapnames, to improve your chances of snagging a domain during a drop. For Enom expired domains, stay away from GoDaddy and concentrate on NameJet and Snapnames. Think about placing a straight backorder for the domain through EnomCentral, the company's registrar. At auctions, be ready to bid, with a $100 maximum. After the domain is registered, move it to Porkbun or another registrar of your choice.
