I'd like to hear any experiences (especially negative ones) with VPS as we have outgrown our host and are moving up.

VPS looks really good since we are not ready for a full dedicated. The host we will probably go with uses Virtuozzo but I am unfamiliar with it.

Anything I should look out for? Box will be dual 2.6 xeon with 2gb ram.

Would also like to hear general VPS host recommendations for me to compare to...

I think you should be a little more focused in asking for reviews. That's like me asking for reviews on cars, without giving any more information.

What company are you currently thinking of buying from?

Well I asked for hosts with vps so that's like asking for "sports cars" ;)
at least I narrowed the field... I'd like to hear from others before I start dropping names...

PowerVPS
EuroVPS
HostForWeb
ServInt

There's some good companies for you. ServInt and PowerVPS would probably be my favorite if I were you.

Thank you... looking at all of them now...

Any "gotcha" feedback? Do you have vps experience?

I use PowerVPS. Support has been phenomenal! 3-4 minute ticket responses on average with their 24 hour support staff.

The servers are fast, dual AMD Opteron processors ... and the space and bandwith they give you is plenty. (10 gb space / 150 b/w) I'm currently using their cPanel $44.50 a month plan.

Highly recommended!

Can video be smoothly streamed off a VPS?
Not something that I will do often but it would be nice to know.

With high bandwidth videos can be streamed off a vps.

Any opinions on Liquid's VPS?
Their price is a little higher but have 800 # support and claim to help co-manage if you need them...

From what I have read, powervps does not proactively apply security patches and fixes, leaving it up to you and charging you for every request for assistance. That can add up in a hurry.

I have extensive cpanel experience, but only at the reseller level. I have my own senior tech to call on but that's also a time delay issue.

I think you might have some good deal with http://www.dehe.com/ as they seem to be professional in this field.

I told them to update cPanel recently and they did it for me, for free. They have never charged me extra for support.

I would have to agree with edder. I've been with PowerVPS for almost 6 months now, and I wouldn't think of moving anywhere else. Every ticket I've ever put in was answered within 5 to 10 minutes. When I first started out with a VPS, I had alot of dumb newbie questions. They held my hand and answered the questions for me. They've installed every update and upgrade I've ever asked them to, all for free. Their VPS are 100% managed, so there should never be any cost for updates, upgrades or security patches.

I have used both ServInt and VPSColo and both have outstanding service.

Stay away from ServInt. They used to be a good VPS provider, but not any more. They've had alot of troubles with their networks and their techs don't know much about software installation beyond the basic setups. The VPS industry has been advancing steadily, but ServInt is falling behind in pricing, support, and policy. Their servers will ping pretty fast, sure. But the cPanel administration is slooooow. They don't seem to have anything to say about this at all. I suspect they've gotten into the overselling game just like many other hosts have.

You can find better and cheaper out there. Spry, PowerVPS, LiquidWeb, all beat the tar out of ServInt.

Servint.com, Liquidweb.com, and EuroVPS are probably your best choice. Look for a provider with at least 8 GB of memory with dual processors and Raid. Don't settle for anything less. You should expect to pay $40+ per month. Anything less and you're asking for trouble.
