Verisign pays $5 million annually to the Government of Tuvalu to be the sole registry operator of .TV.

Verisign has the rights to sell .TV domain names up to December 31, 2021 that its contract expires. The domain is currently operated by dotTV, a Verisign company; the Tuvalu government owns twenty percent of the company.

I can think of a few .tv players who, if they'd got together, could have paid that amount with what they've collectively paid on acquiring .tv names over the years.

Yes, but while they could have paid it - they don't have the branding or industry credibility of Verisign. While the brands certainly have done more to put their hand in the cookie jar, vs helping the extension, I still think it is a good thing to have a name brand at the controls.

BTW What is Richard Rosenblatt doing these days. That is a name I haven't Googled in a while.
