Geesh give me a break! I thought this was another fake/joke article at DG but it's 100% true. I've not seen xyz or any other new extension do any wrong doing within ads pertaining to .com, if anything just stating the facts.

Funny that they feel threatened but like all gTLD belivers have said it's only a matter of time before they start taking off and it appears the King is getting upset.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
This seems to be a conflation of two issues:

First being the registering of .xyz domains automatically for some existing .com owners.. this can be seen as a direct threat that is misleading to their existing .com registrants and did pump up the size of the .xyz registry with registrations that were actually done on someone else's behalf or were free altogether. This is likely the first thing that angered Verisign.

Second is to protect their position as THE obvious #1 global tld. This is a very clear threat to the other new gTLD registries not to make any negative or potentially controversial statements in advertising about .com, thus driving further and further separation from what is .com and.. the rest of those other tlds.

It's a fact a registry operator is unable to giveaway free domain names and therefore it would need to be the register company, where you register the domains that do a free giveaway as it's their customer base and not XYZ.

Protect what position? 120 million .coms vs. less than a million .xyz? :xf.wink:

Sounds like .com doesn't adapt well with all the new gTLDS, JMO.
