Value of three character domains

If you believe, like I do, that the ultimate value of a domain is determined by what a retail buyer would pay for it, the prices paid for many three character domains seems very high.

I used one to make a short email address, and I have used others to hold a "throwaway" website when I wanted to sell something via a newspaper classified and it was important to use fewer characters. However, it has never made sense to use one to build out a real site.

Has anyone seen a good site built around a sub-prime three character name?

Character NOT letter Obviously, many three letter combos make sense.

F2C.com is a good example but since they served a popunder when I landed and another ad page on the way out I will never go there again.

There certainly aren't as many CCC.coms as legendary as their LLL.com counterparts.

Sub-Prime is open for discussion. Something like q7x is never going to be anything memorable. f2c is quite memorable so .com or .net, that would work.

In terms of brand recognition, would you rather have A9W.com or B-E-T.com? I'd certainly prefer the L-L-L.com, provided it was a good one. I see not purpose however to some ghastly L-L-L.com which serves no purpose even as a LLL.com but to keep domainers busy flipping it to each other.
