Hard question to answer, but not taking "the" name into account, what would you think one of the original 100 first .com's registered would be worth? These are sort of like "historic sites" and hold a great deal of significance for the history of the internet.

This is not a discussion about the first .com's registered (we already had a post discussing that recently), but rather their value. What YOU would pay to obtain one?

Age or not: If it's a good domain, I'd pay a lot and if the domain sucks, I wouldn't be interested.

Not sure if domainers would be interested (I wouldn't), however, I'm sure there may be some domain collectors out there who might like a name regged before 1990.

I agree with you. I'm not sure what someone would place as a value on such a domain. I saw a recent thread on another forum where someone was looking to buy pre-93 domains. Most of the offers I saw fell in the mid-high $x,xxx range. I'm assuming this was for age alone, as they weren't all that great :)

But there definitely is some historical significance here. I'm a major history buff, and I like antiques, so this sort of falls into the same category. I guess what I'm saying is if I had tons of money and nothing better to spend it on... :)

I'm kind of a history buff myself as well. I am not getting this extremely cheap (5000 usd) but the name is higher quality and the domain is over 20 years old to the same owner. I don't know how he could part with it to be honest.

I appreciate the feedback that has been given. There really is no market value for these due to the rarity. Just what ever someone would be willing to spend.

I agree that regardless of age, if it was a bad domain, I might not even pay reg fee for it.

I think the general thought is DEVELOPMENT/ESTABLISHMENT over age. I'd rather have a power domain, one that's shown its might in establishment, opposed to something that's simply old.

The age of a domain is of clear interest to internet enthusiasts. Its essentially a piece of history. Just like a historic house society wants to collect really old houses, though they might look like hell, they are just a piece of history. The price of a domain should only be afftected by its age when it is over 15 years old. For example if say the domain yuidkfos.com was about 20 years old, many would say thats garbage, but certain people would be intrigued by the age of the domain and buy it for very high prices.

You know what they say, one man's trash is another man's treasure.

If you wouldn't mind, I'm sure we would all be interested in hearing what the domain is once you acquire it.

I think if it's 20 years old and a good quality name, you're getting a bargain for $5k

Best of luck.

Again, I appreciate the many opinions shared.

I would be happy to tell you the name after it is in my name (Thursday likely). I have already paid for it and the seller warned me that it would be Thursday at the soonest for him to do his part.

I can tell you that the name is pretty good. It is taken in most other TLD's. I find it really interesting that these first 100 domains were registered by companies and/or individuals that had "inside" info to this unheard of phenomena called the internet. You had to know the right people and have a certain amount of power to register a domain in "those" days. Valuable or not, I am thrilled with the opportunity to have a piece of internet history!

Did it have anything on it, or was used for anything in particular over the last 20 years?

Thanks Giode, I'm really looking forward to find out what's the name and how much you paid for it. :)

All the best.

Interesting, was the name continuously registered for all this time or has it dropped in the past? Would like to know the name!

I am the NEW owner of DataCube.com! Registered 23-Apr-1987. Hard to believe! I like this name, even though it isn't a generic dictionary word. What do you think? Good or bad buy for 5000usd?

For 5k?? This is like the best buy of the year...

That's a great deal. Not the world's greatest domain, but a very strong domain. 5K was definitely a steal for a domain aged 20 years (to me at least). Now you need to start selling data cubes and be the world's greatest data cube selling site. :D
