Here's my question..what is the value of domain hack? I've seen some good domain hack and i was wondering about the value of it. I myself own one and i'm not sure whether or not i should get more. I haven't seen any sale of domain hack. Why do we register domain hack? Is it because the domain looks cool or because there's a potential end user who's willing to buy such domain?

BTW if anyone here (looking at the big dogs) is looking to liquidate their less valuable names, please send me a list. Can't afford premiums but xx-xxx

Cryp.to is a top hack for sure, but if comparing a 1 word hack to it's .com counterpart value-wise... easily enough determined by a poll put to domain investors here. Even 10 years from now, IMO .com will win. Just because the bias towards .com is so deep-rooted with so many more investors.

It'd be interesting to put the poll forward on a non-investors platform geared to the Regular Joe populace. The hack "cool" factor might give it an edge, or the novelty of it.

The problem with hacks is they are usually names broken by the dot. Personally I think there's an advantage to domain hacks that readable as legitimate terms pre-dot and then as well after spanning the dot.

Hacks are appreciated mostly by us, .com understood by the world. Being said, there are tons of hacks in use by end users who get it too.

Is that...a problem?

We love hacks because of the dot.

This is what happens when new gTLDs go too far in pricing domains as premium! :ROFL:

DigitalF.art
is a premium domain name available at the price of $ 150.50 *, then $ 42.00 / yr *

And no, it is not the case that any letter followed by digital has the same price tag. :xf.rolleyes:

lol

bitco.in is worth min. $100K and $1M with the forum (one of the oldest Bitcoin forums).

You may be right, now that I thought about it more :). I can't say "It's really whatever the market will bear." it's more of "Whatever your ideal customer will pay". I have to remind myself from time to time, that usually my pricing opinion sometimes don't match real world results!

Crazy stuff happening at y.at (yat) https://destiny.y.at/#auction-lots with a sub (emoji) domain hack selling for $425K.

This is incredible publicity for domain hacks and it will further increase their values.

Unless i'm mistaken, what they appear to be doing is appending emoji's to the end of an urban slang inspired hack-word (y.at) and suggesting that this has some kind of value...

In practice, then, they are selling web addresses like this: e.g. y.at/emoji1emoji2.

The fact is 'though, "Yat", as a reference, is virtually meaningless (I believe it's supposed to mean "you at"...), and emoji's are, at best, somewhat confusing.

In addition, Google will probably (effectively) ban these addresses through their Chrome browser by declaring that, on addresses that use emoji's, there's a "fake site ahead". They did this recently with symbol-based names such as โ‚ฌ.com, etc...

To me, Y.at's offering is, to put it kindly, worthless... Y.at are, I think, the latest example of a severely over-heated NFT market, and when the dust settles on all of this madness then domain hacks will definitely get more attention.

Also, they claim on their site that there is a use-case scenario (for these addresses), where you could use them as a user-friendly crypto payment address.

As far as I am aware, however, this is merely a claimed use-case on their part, and that they don't yet have relationships with wallet providers, etc.. so these addresses could actually be used to send crypto!

(Seriously 'though, who on earth is ever going to say "Pay me 22crypto via y.at/emoji" ?! You would be much better off getting a .crypto addy).

Okay, let's get this thread back to business! I found a few more domain hacks being put to good use.

intra.net
--> vialect.com (They sell Intranet solutions).
a.mp --> winksite.com (Creating mobile websites).
chit.chat --> A site where you pay to connect to people. II guess it is under development.
fr.at --> A DeFi platform
n.at --> neckermann.at (Seems like a local company using it for their store.)
br.at --> bitrace.at
u.ae --> Official Government Website of UAE.
de.fi --> Upcoming it seems.
blinki.st --> Blinkist.com (A service which provides summarized audio content for books and such).

What I notice, as a growing trend, is that most new businesses which are social media savvy or ones which target a younger audience, tend to get the domain hack of their name together with a .com or whatever. Also, it seems that unlike gTLDs which can directly capture two-word (or more) phrases, domain hacks with ccTLDs cannot easily be acquired simply on account of trademarks. I'm not suggesting that one tries to squat on those names, but I am saying that companies cannot just randomly claim that this is a violation when your actual keyword is not their name. The extension in a ccTLD is not meant to be a part of the name, but we use it like that in a hack. In the new gTLDs, the domain extension is very much meant to be part of the name.

Also, it is just incredible how gTLDs are pricing their names. All good hacks and phrases are already marked premium and with, sometimes, absurdly high fees. Here is a relatively new TLD that you may not have heard about, https://icannwiki.org/.ist. Before you look up prices for nice hacks possible with .ist, here's an example!

Makes you like the .st extension so much more! I managed to get Physici.st last year without paying any premium. I did, however, got one domain in .ist, called completion.ist as it was not marked a premium.

I guess we could share our occasional good hand-registrations or acquisitions for domain hacks here. I'd begin err... end by expressing my sincere.st desire to see domain hacks flourish. :xf.wink:
