Here's my question..what is the value of domain hack? I've seen some good domain hack and i was wondering about the value of it. I myself own one and i'm not sure whether or not i should get more. I haven't seen any sale of domain hack. Why do we register domain hack? Is it because the domain looks cool or because there's a potential end user who's willing to buy such domain?

Hi, a newbie here. Any opinion about sociali.se.com.
Would you consider it as a domain hack and would it be worth something?

It is a domain hack but I don't see any value in it especially since it's just a subdomain of se.com and no buyer in his right mind would buy the subdomain and keep the root control with someone else.

Toni, i don't think it is a subdomain.. I think that we are talking about sweden's domain extension here..

In any case, it would still need heavy branding to put it on the map in my opinion..

sociali.se.com is a subdomain

sociali.se is sweden

and sociali.ze is a more frequent spelling

I got NFCphones and WestIndies

I know you're supposed to stay away from two word hacks, but I liked these anyway.

A few months ago I registered peepto.es. Not sure if this are one or two words. Rather popular term for a special kind of womens shoes though.

Here's a question.
What are your opinions on the value of domain hacks relative to other extensions?
For example, for domains with the same term, you might say .com is most valuable, .net less so, .info less again.
Would you value pirat.es more than pirates.co, pirates.us or pirates.info?
I know there is no hard fast rule, just asking for your personal reflections.

It's a pretty debatable question and I think it varies from case to case.

The highest hack sales I've seen are higher than the .com would've brought but that's not a rule.

It depends on the exact term, "brandability", searches etc.

As a 'general' rule I will set a value at 5-10% of dot com when it's a generic exact term as I've seen it somewhere else too.

But besides being shorter and easy to remember domain hacks have on thing that other names don't : Uniqueness! While 200 different persons can own pirates.tld only one person can own pirat.es for example. That's the edge here.

But domain hacks are not for everybody, many are not seeing it with good eyes and are not aware of these but as time will go by they will be more popular as I see it.

Hope that answers your question more or less. Also if anyone wants to drop a line Here, it's appreciated!

hey ive read through most of the pages and couldnt see anything on domain hacking brands. For example what is someone bought

app.le
Ni.ke

and started selling things from those brands. I know .ke and .le dont exist is a hypothetical question. There was a guy who bought Qant.as

I couldnt find any WIPO decisions on domain hacks. As it appears only the full name is considered and the TLD is not considered part of the domain.

Would love to hear what people think

For example someone has Lex.us do you think lexus could take the domain from them?

If they are selling Lexus cars with no authorization then I think yes.

Trademarks are only on the name, not extension so a domain hack can't be a trademark in the examples you gave.

But if you are acting like a "pirate" then I think they have a case. Though there should be more opinions on this.
