Four-letter .com’s are rising in value, but they are plowing along glacially compared to 4-letter grammatically pronounceable .com’s. Four-letter brandables are rising as well, as they are growing scarce on the aftermarket. Finding a domain that is both isn’t impossible, yet securing one typically requires an investment far out of range for most people.

The few that have sold recently carried a pretty steep price tag. To illustrate my point, take a look at a few past sales, the data courtesy of the domain sales reporting website NameBio. Wrap your mind around this: Pretty much all reported sales of random-letter, not brandable/pronounceable LLLL.com domains yield $125-200 results. Even this year, they’ve been selling for peanuts. fqay.com did poorly in October of this year, finishing at $135. pjlv.com did worse, failing to crack $130. Sure, the sad naqz.com ends with a Z, yet it nailed only $151. Reasons? It’s not a word, and it isn’t pronounceable.

bagz.com, on the other hand, is a real-word four-letter pronounceable .com. Its selling price? A whopping $14,999. This sale wasn’t a fluke: eatz.com scored $15,000, buyz.com scored $10,000, and hotz.com landed $14,000--all the way back in the year 2007! Even the not-as-versatile pinz.com got $7,000. Those who bought gayz.com ($4,000), bigz.com ($4,000), and godz.com ($6,111) years back got steals.

VAGZ.com has three practical uses. “Vag” is a noun, defined as a “vagrant.” It could be branded as such. The letters have many potential acronyms. A few, for reference: Volkswagen Audi Group, Vancouver Art Gallery, Vertical Alliance Group. As there are many locales beginning with V, this domain would surely fit the need of any group from such areas. Vag is also the common freehand slang for ‘vagina,’ thus VAGZ.com could be used in the adult niche for an impossible-to-forget adult web address. It is nearly impossible to buy an adult .com of this magnitude without paying a king's ransom. A one-word adult .com would cost you easily over $100,000. A short, 4-letter adult .com? They are never found on sale--the owners refuse to sell them. This auction isn’t merely for a domain: It’s for brand recognition you can’t find anywhere on the market at a reasonable price.

Perhaps I’m crazy to sell this in 2015 (at this rate, I could envision this selling for thousands more, had I waited a few years to list it) but 2016 is approaching & I want to clear my portfolio. Perchance I’m crazier, offering this for no reserve. Yet here it is: VAGZ.com on auction here in 2015, starting with no reserve. Yes, a $1 bid could theoretically win you this domain. It was recently transferred to GoDaddy. This domain doesn’t expire until July of 2017. The history of the domain goes back as far as 2001, according to archive.org. As I’m not monitoring traffic, this auction assumes none.

Are you dating material?

Only a select few industries are guaranteed to never wane. The love/dating niche is one of them, among the most Recession-proof niches online. TIME magazine once estimated that there were 1,000 marriage and dating sites in the U.S., and reported that the industry snagged sales of $649 million in 2006. That was nearly a decade ago—as the Internet is far more commercially available (and thus used more frequently), these numbers are now in the 10-figure range.

Take a peek at a few small startup dating sites. PlentyOfFish.com was started by a guy in his bedroom. That site now pulls in millions of dollars, despite its terrible domain (note: they eventually upgraded to POF.com once money started rolling in). OKCupid.com is another example of a startup dating site that took off, making its creators loads of cash despite a horrid domain. Many blogs exist too, covering every known aspect of dating.

These sites didn’t thrive on the “strength” of their horrid domains. Luck with major news syndicates, resulting in a boatload of advertising, got them to where they are. To stand out from the hordes of small-scale dating websites, you’ll need a domain with serious power… that or countless thousands of dollars to shell out on advertising. If you don’t have/want to spend six figures positioning your website in front of the pack, then a solid domain is what you need.

It’s possible that the dating sites mentioned above used bad domains simply because the owners (at the time of launch) couldn’t afford a decent dating domain. Taking sales figures, courtesy of the domain sales reporting website NameBio, it seems this notion is highly likely. What is the price of a good dating domain? Lots. Numerous $1,000 sales litter the landscape, yet they are lower-quality entities. But the likes of SwingerDate.com secured $2,049 last summer while DateMyDaughter.com wrapped up a $2,400 sale three years earlier. Even AnalDate.com somehow sold for $2,869.

And then there are the pricier ones: gaydating.com $75,196 | videodating.com $50,000 | freedatingservice.com $20,000 | blinddating.com $14,000 | datingsecrets.com $25,000 | singlesdating.com $16,722 | millionairedating.com $15,000 | casualdating.com $30,000 | datingwomen.com $12,000 | dateidea.com $20,028 | findadate.com $31,000 | mydreamdate.com $11,770 | datefinder.com $19,000 | dater.com $15,000

Yeah, it’s safe to say they couldn’t afford it.

The domain DatingMaterial.com had been in private hands for over a decade. But it’s nearly 2016, and I want to clean out my portfolio. So I’m offering DatingMaterial.com to the public. Unlike the vast majority of dating domains, DatingMaterial.com is a solid, fluent phrase, used commonly in English. plentyoffish.com could never say that.

In fact, I’ll give the winner of this auction a dating script (view it by visiting the domain). It was just recently added to the domain, thus no traffic should be assumed. The website scripts offer users free and/or paid dating profiles. It requires PHP (newest version would be best) and one MySQL database, plus the ability to use .htaccess/mod_rewrite. I can set up the script on the winner’ server for free—just ask.

In a realistic sense, this domain belongs up there with those 5-figure sales. Yet here it is, listed for $1.The reserve? There is none. You could theoretically win this with a single, one-dollar bid. The winner of this auction will get the following:

The domain DatingMaterial.com (registered at GoDaddy, expires in mid/late 2016)

The professionally designed logo

The dating script found @ www.datingmaterial.com

Hosting isn’t included with this auction, although I can get you cheap/reliable hosting for cheap. Ask for details.
