It appears the domain industry has been starting to take notice of the .us namespace over the past year, read DnJournal.com .us growth and Namepros with even greater expectations for the year to come.

So I thought it would be a good idea to ask everyone to show us your .us domain names. You can post your favorites or your entire portfolio.

How much are they going for in general?

I mean outside of the obvious good ones, ATV, MIA, SQL and SQA etc, I fail to see what makes them so desirable. A few months ago people couldn't give them away - yet they are never allowed to drop.

I'm assuming that some of those listed were single bidder at snapnames?

I would like DHS.us... though I'm not sure it's cool to make fun of the government.

While I love to see .us doing so well at yahoo, I'm concerned about a trend I'm seeing (and it doesn't take long to find it) where there are various "keyword intensive" .us domains being developed out with basic affiliate stores, ranked on page 1 of yahoo, and the whois is seemingly always in Thailand. In many cases the names have hyphens, numerals or even just random characters added... but they are ranking with extreme regularity.

An example keyword you can try out at yahoo - cheap laptops. You'll see what I mean.
Yeah, those are some ugly names. The GoDaddy $2.99 special seems to be driving new regs but the downside is bringing out the mass-contentLESS site parade. No way should those sites all be up there, gotta be some blackhat or at best greyhat stuff going on. Google does a better job than Yahoo of culling out such blatant SEO hounds.

I personally bought many of the LLL.us that had all quality letters. They fell out of favor with the market because all the big .US investors bought a bunch about 18 months ago when one seller liquidated about 1400 LLL.us and have enough or feel fully invested.

So, there is little domainer to domainer interest which has brought the names down. I get offers monthly on LLL.us typically between 400-800 and DO not sell.

To me, if your NOT a developer and can buy LLL.us where the .com is taken and in USE....long term you will make money.

I have DHS.US :)

I bought DSD.US as it has nice letters, and it's easy to say.

lll .us are not selling very often, but now and again theres been a few $2/3000 + sales for good letters, but not "premium" so for a couple $$$ a piece it makes sense to buy them up.

i think i own 65 lll names now, 10 crap, 40 good,15 premium something like that.

I wish i spent 90% of my money invested in .us on premium lll names.

If I might add a question here in regards to LLL.us or any LLL domain for that matter...

Let's say I see a made up LLL.us up on auction like xlx.us and I look in the trademark listings and "xlx" has a live trademark.

Am I running the risk by registering xlx.us that the owner of the trademark could contact me and force me to delete it? Or do I have to have a webpage set up related to the trademark owner's material for me to be breaking the trademark rights?

I know this may not have been the best place for this question but I see some LLL.us listed here which clearly are listed with live TMs and I am really curious about this.

Thank you.

I'm not a lawyer, and I don't even play one on TV, but here is my understanding of the issue.

You might encounter a challange, but that challange might be defendable depending on how you use your name and that fact that is an acronymn stands in your favor.

Let's assume that the name is ATT.us. American Telephone and Telegraph has a trademark on ATT. If you were to use it as a telecommunications site, or any other product line you would indeed be in TM vilation. Even if you just park it and the parking ads point to those services, including ATT's site you would have issues.

If however you have a business by the name of, say, "All Terrain Tires" and set up a web store for that comany on the name, I don't think you would be in violation.

That being said, ATT, could still challange it, and I am sure they have deeper pockets to fight a challange. The cost to defend would most likely be cost prohibitive.

For me I would stay away, just because of the risk. Year's ago I created a t-shirt that was distributed nationally that used 3 frogs and was a parody of the Budweiser commercial. Eventually Budweiser's lawyers sent me a cease and disist order challanging copyright infringement. My attorney assured me that "parody" is a legal defence and that we would win a court challange. He also said the legal challange would probably cost more than our expected future profits, so I discontinued the shirt, but had already made a nice profit on the project. I see your situation as similar. You could use it fully in a way that should not be considered a violation, but still face the legal challange.

Remeber, do not take this as legal advice. It is just my layman thoughts.

I believe the above is correct in most cases, but I once made the mistake of registering a coke (beverage) related name. After doing some research the advice I remember was that "the Coke trademark is so wide and so deep that even if you started coke airlines you would loose."

I think it is really dangerous to park these kind of names because they are likely to show infringing ads. I would put up a "place holder", non-infringing site ASAP.

One thing to remember is that companies go after each other (in addition to domainers) when it comes to protecting their trademark, and not necessarily because the other company has similar products, but in many cases because their names might be confusingly similar to each other specially when you are taking about famous marks or brands. Even if you can defend these kind of domains successfully you still have to ask yourself as a reseller how easy it would to be to find a company that wants a domain in .US that is already being associated with an existing famous mark or brand in another extension. (just my opinion, not meant as legal advice.)

Excellent feedback and advice. That is what I was looking for. In the end, though it is a 3 char short domain, the hassles and risk may not be worth it if a trademark exists. I will keep this in mind if I pursue some LLL.us domains from auctions.

Trademark = Trade + Mark. Trademarks exist for virtually any LLL, what matters is usage. It just can't be confusingly similar.

Many generic words have trademarks, but they are for uses other than the generic meaning.

TM law is never black and white, it is all a gray area. It is decided on a case by case basis.
