It appears the domain industry has been starting to take notice of the .us namespace over the past year, read DnJournal.com .us growth and Namepros with even greater expectations for the year to come.

So I thought it would be a good idea to ask everyone to show us your .us domain names. You can post your favorites or your entire portfolio.

Of course it makes sense- for someone who wants to develop a site promoting Dubai tours/property etc to potential customers in the US- could be very lucrative. :$:
Well said wot.
It's those who think outside of the box that find ways to earn in this industry.

Although, this is pretty obvious, imo.
I hope the buyer develops a great site on it.

The original question was does it make sense to have a Dubai.us domain.

Dubai is not in the USA which is why most of the commentators have said no,
it does not make sense with a .US extension.

Of course everything is arguable.

And I do believe strongly in thinking outside the box.

But you can also spend all day trying to fit a round peg in a square hole.

I do agree that you could promote a Dubai tour service or Dubai real estate
investment service but I believe you'd be better off with a niche domain such as DubaiTours.us or DubaiInvesting.us, etc.

Of course you could have Dubai.us/Tours or Tours.Dubai.us but I believe
they would be awkward domains in comparison.

Just today I registered GreenExpo.us.

Would it make sense if the expo was to be held in Dubai?

To my way of thinking, no.

Dubai.us as a geo domain doesn't make sense. However, anyone with Nexus can own a .us domain for just about any purpose. Here are only a few possibilities if you think creatively.

A US travel agency specializing in Dubai travel.
A US company selling Dubai real estate.
An export/import company specializing in Dubai-US trading.
A US website ran by he country of Dubai for promoting their country
A site specifically for the US Embassy for Dubai (if hey have one...)
A US social networking site for Dubai citizens resident in the US.
A US based blog about Dubai as a destination.
A US entrepreneur parking to get hits on the strong Dubai keyword.

What was the final sale price for this domain?

It went for $750. I was expecting more.

Hmm..checked the whois record..and it seems like a german guy got it. Unless he has a business presence here in the states, I think we might see this domain deleted again in the near future..

The last line is enough for me to think it has a reasonable chance of success.

If you are thinking of developing it, you might want to register HardDiskRecovery (dot) us too, as that is presently available.

wot,

The question was does it make sense to reg Dubai in the .US extension.

The answer is NO. It does not make sense.

If the question was: "Can I register Dubai.us and turn it into a viable
site?"

Then the answer would be: "Of course. It's possible to turn any domain
into a viable site".

See:
del.icio.us
google.com
flickr.com
ebay.com
yahoo.com
etc.
etc.
etc.

Actually, Dubai.us can make perfect sense. As stated earlier, there may be a US-based travel agency that focuses on Dubai vacations or something like that.

So to group it in the category of google or flickr (made-up names) is not appropriate, IMO.

We agree to differ-In some instances I think it make sense to reg overseas destinations in local extensions- hence my answer would be Yes probably if you have something in mind for it. :hi:

You are missing the point.

Dubai.us is not intuitive since Dubai is not located in the USA and most Americans have not heard of it. Just ask some of your friends.

Just like made up words that are not intuitive, you have to do some work to
make the domain work.

Pizza.com needs no explanation. It's intuitive.

If someone created a type of pizza in Zimbabwe and called it "Pierro"
and all the extensions were taken except "Pierro.us", would it make sense
to register it?

NO!!! Nobody here in the USA knows what Pierro is.

But if you were going to import Pierro into the USA and make a business
out of it, then YES!!! Register it.

If you saw the domain Flickr.com or Google.com ,etc. for the first time,
you'd have no idea what the domain was about.

But now you do.

You could make Dubai.us into "a US-based travel agency that focuses on Dubai vacations"
but it would take some work.

Dubai.us doesn't make sense if you are registering it just because it's available and you just Park it.

Next year it will drop...and someone else will grab it...and the cycle continues.

Dubai.us does not make sense...on it's own.

But you can certainly make it make sense.

Two different issues.

I am getting off this merry-go-round.

Good luck and have fun with whatever domain(s) you decide
to register. :)

All is :imho:

wot,

I agree.

"...if you have something in mind for it"

Just to register it because it's available doesn't make sense.

Register it to do something with it (NOT Parking), does make sense.

We do not really disagree, I think. :)

But even if we do disagree I welcome the exchange of thoughts and ideas.

That's how we learn...and stretch ourselves.

It would be a pretty boring if we all thought exactly the same way.

It's been a pleasure agreeing and disagreeing and banging heads (in a friendly way) with all of you.

it's not natural or a generic geo domain for sure. Just for kicks I looked up some other unnatural domains These are real and developed websites:

unitedstates.ca
unitedstates.co.uk
unitedstates.de
unitedstates.eu

They may not make geo sense, but they do make sense developed as a business use of a keyword. They give people of those countries information on the subject of the keywords.

Your point is well taken but please realize that everyone knows
about the "unitedstates" and most are interested in the United States
so of course it will work as a domain in any extension.

Dubai is not so well known here in the USA but that could change.

"unitedstates" is like "pizza"- extremely intuitive.
