Just interested to know, .US domain names are still popular?

Would you choose a .US domain for your business (if other extensions [.com, .net, .org] were taken)?

I'm really not sure because I live in another country but I think .us extension is still popular. If you live in the US and own a local business then it makes sense to use that TLD.

To answer your second question, no. I would rather use the .biz extension for my business.

I'm in the States, but don't care too much for the .US extension. If COM/NET/ORG were all taken I may even lean towards a new TLD as opposed to US. just my opinion

What do you mean by "still?" As far as I know, they have never been popular. If I had a US business and wanted to emphasise the US-ness, I would use .us. To date, though, things like cctlds are for foreigners, not Americans.

Well I mean popular among US local businesses. If it's not the case then I'm sorry 'cause I based that on the assumption that it is more appropriate to use your country's extension if you plan on targeting the local population.

If your doing something that could be divided up by regions in the US likes job postings or mapping and .com/.net/.org are all take I would use .US. Examples would be: solarjobs(.)us or solarmap(.)us

I agree. But by far most Americans think .com is an American tld. I have always thought that it would change someday as .com becomes more obviously international, and have so far lost money on that assumption. I still think Americans will come around, I just have no idea when. I haven't taken a poll, but I think most people in the US don't know that .us even exists.

I have never had any luck selling .us ... However, i see there have been quite a few sales of .us on bido auctions as of late.

.us does not have the same local appeal or credibility that you see with other ccTLDs (in their respective locales).
Americans see .com as much more credible. If you are a non-profit / NGO, then .org.
Everything else is a "cheap" substitute.

All i will say is that i have chosen not to underestimate .US too much. .US must be gaining somehow from America's position and relevance in the world. just my 2 cents.I'm not dropping the .us domains i own.

One thing to keep in mind with a .us is that you won't be able to have domain privacy if you need that. Other than that a .us would be way down my list if shopping for a domain extension.

I have had no luck with .us extensions. You can tell if the extension is not doing good when a lot of great names are still available in that extension. I only see it useful if it has to do with location like, zipcodes.us, or NewYork.us....Or a word hack like Thesaur.us etc.

For business probably not. .US might be good if <yourname>.{com,net} are taken (as is overwhelmingly likely), or for some sort of US-based non-business organization.

If your not in USA with registered business you will likely lose them without opportunity to resell.
They are not dead they will be the most likely of odd extensions to thrive in years.

I've sold a couple of .us names, (CreditScore & CourtRecords). I've only ever held about 10 of them and they have all long since dropped. I don't count on the extension ever gaining significant ground here because of .com. The registry is also poorly managed and there has never been enough advertising, which there would need to be A LOT of, if it were to take off.

Btw, i would not consider .us a great extension, but i refuse to call it a bad extension(aka not worth investing in). America is too rich and relevant for its extension to be a complete waste.Dont think you will lose by owning very good names in .us(not average names!). just my 2 cents...

In the last 30 daty only about 30 3 letter.us have dropped. Of those only 9 are still available. A year or so ago they were dropping at a much greater rate, sometimes more than 30 per day. Most of these weren't registered right away but they are now.

The conversation was just the same on NP ten years ago. Being an oldtimer, you may remember Back then domainers were trading LLL.us, which is no longer the case today. I've made a few good LLL.us sales but overall they are not very liquid, and not very sought after. In my opinion, the state of .us can be summed up in one word: stagnation.
