Why is there an "unthank" that appears after thanking someone for a post? Some sort of take-back? if it goes away, I'll thank you (and not change my mind and take it back).

Well, it's easy to click on the wrong link.
Once or twice I have clicked Disliked by mistake, fortunately I was able to cancel that :)

Exactly. I have also clicked like or thanks on the wrong post before.

It gave an easy fix for the problem.

I have better things to think about than buttons and links here.

Hahahahhahaha.....

I can understand mistakenly clicking the wrong button. I'd rather see an "Are you sure?" confirmation of the click rather than an "undo". Semantics, maybe, but my preference in lieu of a better design.

This sounds good in theory, however how long would it take before people started getting annoyed with a pop-up "Are you sure" every time they click "Like, Thanks, or Dislike"?

It may cause people to use the feature less in order to avoid the extra obstacle. A one step process (which we use now) with option of reversal seems a little smoother / transitional, rather than a 2 step (popup) process with no option of removal later doesn't it?

Lets not forget that some people click dislike out of anger, caught up in the moment. Then when they calm down a few hours later they realize that the dislike they clicked wasn't warranted and just out of spite. In this scenario, having the remove option available is very beneficial. However, if it was a 2 step process with no removal later, they can no longer correct their mistake. And it wouldn't make much sense to have both a 2 step process and a removal, as that would defeat the purpose of the suggestion to remove the removal option.

The issue here seems to be more of why it's good to have a way to "UN-Dislike" a post that's made by mistake or in anger. I was talking about the "Unthank" choice. (I assumed there was both an "unthank" and an "un-dislike.") I can see how clicking a "Thanks" without writing anything shows appreciation of what has already been written and is conducive to further posts, but I guess I can't imagine a reason to unthank.

As for the problem with needing an "Un-dislike" why put a "dislike" at all? If someone wants to be critical, they should write it out (or have the button require a reply before it can be clicked), not just lob unexplained dislikes from the sidelines. It's a forum, after all. Writing out a disagreement can be helpful, but just clicking Dislike helps no one. If there must be a negative choice, how about something civil like "Don't agree"?

The 'unthank' button is very handy as it is very easy to click the wrong link. Pop-ups asking you to confirm the action would be very annoying.

Ok, lets forget I mentioned the un-dislike for a moment and focus more on examples of unthank / unlike. For starters, I think members are already expressing their reasons for wanting an unthank or unlike feature as opposed to pop-ups in this thread.

In addition to what members are already saying, let's not forget that a Like or a Thanks is an endorsement. If a highly reputable member likes / thanks (endorses) a post, other members that see they liked / thanked that post and knows the endorser will more than likely hold higher credibility for the post being liked / thanked. Keeping that in mind, lets say further research proves that the post was using false information, forged documents, or maybe they simply missed the target for accuracy. In this instance, the member that endorsed (thanked / Liked) the post may want to retract their endorsement as to no longer be associated with misinformation.

Misinformation can steer newer members the wrong direction and possibly discredit the endorser for supporting such a thing.

People don't always look at all the facts & do all the research before replying, thanking, or liking. So when evidence arises that proves something different than it states, I think that members appreciate the ability to change their stance on it.

Removing the ability to cancel an endorsement will lead to hundreds of reported posts to staff asking for them to be removed by us. I would like to think that members are capable of moderating them self in matters such as this. The like / thanks / dislike feature provides a fully functional member expression tool to let everyone know how they feel about a post. One thing you may not have known is that when a post receives a certain amount of dislikes (undisclosed), the post is auto deleted. That's self moderation by members at it's finest. Members deciding what they want to see and what they don't want to see, or what they want to endorse and what they don't want to endorse, or even what they changed their mind about.

I can understand your view on this and appreciate the suggestion. I just think that at this time it's more beneficial to the majority of the members to not subject them to a popup confirmation or to remove the ability to unthank (remove endorsement)

I understand your arguments for keeping the set-up as is. And I understand why some members use it and like it. I guess when it comes down to it, I'm just not not sure why there is a thanking/likes/dislikes system in general. I would prefer members made the slight effort necessary to reply to a post rather than just click on a pre-made comment.

If there were no thanks/like, people who liked the posts enough would reply so and use the quote function to indicate why. Members who didn't like the post would express their dislike or disagreement in a reply. To me, that's the crux of it: It's a forum, and i'd rather read the good and the bad instead of wondering why I got a click on a post.

However, it looks like this system is here to stay, so I'll start using it in areas that need to be criticized but are off limits to that in writing, like members posting a domains wanted thread that want to buy three letter coms for a budget of up to $100 or a domain appraisal for something like customsbirdtampax.com

The problem we had prior to the implementation of the system was threads FULL of 100 posts that just said "Thanks", "Nice Post", "Good Read", "Thanks for sharing", etc.. What that did was saturate a thread so bad with one to 3 word posts that members had to sort through hundreds of posts & pages just to try & find the actual content.

The system in place helps detour the 1 to 3 words posts, helping keep the threads with more meaty content rather than endless saturation and sorting of 1 liners. The system also assists in letting members self moderate (E.G. x amount of dislikes by members auto deletes a bad post)

Granted a few one liners still get through, but they are easier to manage now than they used to be prior to the click of a button option. We still find that people with something genuine to share will share it after they click thanks or like (like we have been doing with each other in this thread). Same for dislikes, I see many members dislike a post that promotes illegal activity & then they follow up with a more detailed post about it. Then there's members that dislike spam posts, which there's really no more to be said, its just a matter of time till the post auto deletes due to the x number of dislikes or a staff member removes it. :)

Thanks, Eric. That answer makes perfect sense.

A video I posted in the break room that I thought was funny got a "dislike" today. I don't mind that, but I would like to know the reason why. The disliker just clicked and left no reply. For all I know, the video offended someone somehow. If that's the case, I'd like to know how.

So, I accidentally clicked dislike on a post and now I can't seem to undo it. I have no option to change it, it just says I dislike the post. Has this option been removed?

I just manually removed the dislike on an appraisal thread for you. I'm guessing thats what you were referring to and I'll double check the feature. I know you can unthank but sure there was an undislike option.

Test post confirms that there "IS" a undislike option right under the dislike display and it worked for me in FF.. what browser are you using?

How odd. I was actually accessing it on my cell phone. I'm using opera right now on my PC and I just disliked your post as a test (don't ban me! lol). I still don't see the option to undislike it. I've included a screenshot. Interestingly enough, I do have the option to unthank if I thank for a post.

By the way, feel free to remove my dislike. :D

Ok, so in Mobile Opera you cant see the undislike.. before I remove it, can test another browser please to see if you can see the undislike link, maybe FF or IE, or Chrome.. anything except mobile opera. I just need to make sure it's isolated to your mobile opera browser and not in others. does your phone have a default browser other opera you can test?

Thanks

Well, I'm in Firefox right now and I still don't see the undislike button. I tried disliking your newest post just to see if it's consistent and it is.

I am using Firefox 22.0 with Windows 7.
