Hi all,

I've just checked http://www.namepros.com/web-hosting-requests/460405-new-rule-21-04-unlimited-web.html
I have to say I completely agree with Joe about the practical limitations of hard-disk space.
But It's absolutely necessary to stress/underline the differences between traffic and bandwidth.

-Network traffic is data in a network. In computer networks, the data is encapsulated in packets.
-bandwidth is a measure of available or consumed data communication resources expressed in bit/s or multiples of it (kbit/s, Mbit/s etc).

If a hosting company gives you unlimited bandwidth, it gives you unlimited bandwidth capacity or unlimited available bandwidth of a logical or physical communication path in a digital communication system.
This is naturally not acceptable because it doesn't exists a router or
Interchange point (On mix (Milan Internet eXchange) about 30gb/s, but not unlimited).

But we can say unlimited traffic.

I worked as system administrator in many italian datacenters and I am sure about it, it's more than my own clarifications.

Someone deleted my thread and I have to say I am honest and loyal it experts to my customers.

For any questions, I am your servant ;)

You can say it but it may be confusing for the customers then they complain. Its better to educate your clients IMHO

I understand it's a little bit confusing.
But Scam????!!!! What's scam?
Bandwidth's Unit of measurement is megabit per second (abbreviated as Mb/s or Mbit/s or Mbps); you cannot say 500 mb. IT'S WRONG!!.

If I say UNLIMITED TRAFFIC on 100mb/s bandwidth, it's right.
I can limit it to UNLIMITED TRAFFIC on 10mb/s or increase to 1gb/s.

If you want to judge and condemn someone (not me, but my NON-PROFIT community), you need to attach a logical clarification.

Bandwidth is related to physical communication path, traffic is related to data.

Thanks for replies ;)

P.S. I remember to you that when you buy a dedicated server (or you built on your own), you will see traffic and bandwidth field.
It should be not hide on good hosting as dedicated :(

Deal with UNMETERD if you need to avoid any scams

You have particular offerings and you have particular provider.
What you can do is discuss that with p[articular provider living all guesses. Good luck to you mate

I'm sorry, but your logic is completely wrong. Unlimited implies that their is no limit, so that would mean any amount of traffic sent anytime, but clearly it's limited by the size of the connection...

Aside from that, I used to buy into the dinstinction between "traffic/transfer" and bandwidth, but that's another fallacy. Frankly speaking, that traffic has to use bandwidth, so it's the same deal as above.

Either way, it's not unlimited. Fudging the truth does not make it true.

True, but when someone say unlimited bandwidwidth, never seen them putting any condition next to it. In anycase, offering unlimited traffic/bandwidth for a shared hosting account is anyway a scam. You dont get unlimited usage of any resource on a shared hosting server, obviously there is a catch - CPU usage or something else.

As serverpoint said. UNMETERED means your traffic is only determined by how much you can use and how often.

Say you are on a 10mbps unmetered port the max you can push is what you are actually receiving. That's also if you do use your bandwidth constantly. Unmetered is just another way of not having to say numbers. It also makes it sound much better than how much is actually being offered.

Right, because none of the offers mention that CPU/RAM/DISK IO is a a limiting feature; they basically bait the person into believing that they signed up for an account that is, for all intents and purposes, unlimited. Now some would argue all hosting does this, but a typical, non-oversold hosting account does imply a limit and these mystical CPU ranges are rarely reached.

Unmetered is the same as unlimited.*

Provided you provide a star next to the word unlimited, no matter how small it is, you won't see any legal trouble.

Note that unmetered and unlimited are different terms with different meanings. Though your intentions may be good, you're false advertising. A lot of companies do it now though...

I've hosted with a few unlimited bandwidth/space hosts in the past and actually they weren't that bad. I used ActiveWebhosting.com and ThePrimeHost.com and never had any down time with either one.

It's up to you how you want to advertise your site but I would strongly advise you put a star next to unlimited...you can be liable for any damages or downtime in the event you can't handle a site's space or traffic.
