I just got to uni on Wednesday, in Cardiff, Wales :)
Who here has been to university, is at university or is just starting off like me?
Any advice for a fresher? :gl:

So far I've learnt not to go out and drink if you have an early lecture the next day.. wasn't a pleasant experience!

Congrats on making it over the bridge. Is it Cardiff or UWIC you're at?

Advice for a fresher other than the obvious...
-Get in with all the cute girls quick.
-Lucozade is your friend
-Get lots of high-lighter pens

Have you experience the Cardiff nightlife yet?

Cardiff :)
I've already got a girlfriend, lucozade was already my best friend and i got highlighter pens long ago so I think I'm ahead of the game here :D

Yeh, it's pretty good. There's so much to do and all within walking distance of where I'm staying. Student Union, Oceana, Revolution etc. as well as the social which is 2 minutes walk from me ;)

12 + years here - lessons learned:
don't get behind
don't be afraid to ask for help
be bold and different with assignments - nobody likes reading the same thing 100 times.
buy used books - save money to work less.
and have fun!

My advice, savor every minute of it... The late nights studying, the parties, the midterms, the huge papers, exams, the hangovers - it all goes so fast.

I would give back all the money I've made since graduating college to experience it all over again!

Learn everything you can, take lots of classes, meet lots of people, and talk to people who think completely different than you.

Universities are the only places on Earth where it is still acceptable to question authority and argue intellectually.

Whatever you do - don't procrastinate - do NOT fall behind. Catching up later is a bitch. D-:

I'm so envious!! Enjoy it, and study hard! :D

Here's the best place I found to buy textbooks (or any other books), it's what I used every semester: http://www.gettextbooks.com/

Remember to thoroughly read the syllabus for every class, and STAPLE it to the inside of your notebook!!!

Join the student government, and take a lowly support position in the background. You will get free tickets to events and shows all over town and also have first grabs at all the free stuff your student fees pay for. Like trips, t-shirts and free dinners.

Make sure you get involved some how with student life, find out which organization has the best parties and biggest budget, and join it. If I was going to do it all again, I would belong to 20 clubs, it's crazy how much money they spend, and it all comes from your student fees.

Network, Network and when you're done, network some more. Fraternity? Good idea, just pick one that's actually existent past college as well - i guess that goes back to the Networking part.
Forge friendships, study groups, share knowledge but be unique in bringing your knowledge to paper. Think a bit outside the box, show heart, wits while demonstrating reason. Impossible? Not at all. It just takes some "nerves" to truly be yourself. Conformity? Too easy. ;)

If I can add on to Mike's comments about study groups. Study groups are great, but make sure the people you study with are as smart as you, and come to the meetings prepared.

If you find yourself doing all the work for the group, drop the group and look for people who have their stuff together, good notes, hand in assignments on time. Stay away from people who desperately need help figuring EVERY little thing out, they will drag you down.

That is, unless she is drop dead gorgeous, then it's Okay to put out your hand and take a "B" in the class.

Tom, yes I have been to University...

to achieve high marks you need to be passionate about what your studying
for every hour you are at Uni...you need to spend 4 hours studying...
1: 4 ratio.

Take notes
Read your notes
Research
Time Management
and network with other students..even start a study group

Hope thats helped..all the best with it

Cheers
Corey

I think that's one of the main things I'm worried about, I've been keeping on top of things already, but the course is so intensive that it takes hours to just do pre-seminar/lecture readings!

I'd agree with all of that, apart from the savouring hangovers.. I have to say I'm not a big fan ;)

Very true. Before university you are not seen as "capable" or mature enough to pose such questions, so university is the only time you actually get to really challenge theories and take contraversial viewpoints on subjects. I'm looking forward to it.

Both of those sound like good plans. I've already signed up for a couple of clubs, I don't want to overdo it though and not have time for anything else though! So I think I'll limit myself to 5 :)
Regarding the student 'government', I'm sure there are lots of positions open, so it would be great if I could get those benefits without having to really put the effort in. Typical student.. if it's free, it's good! :D

Does college = university ?

If so.. are you mad? :hearts:

I've always viewed university as one of those situations were you can find your 'true self'. It's a clean start and you can basically choose whatever path you wish to take. It's the best opportunity you'll get to do so in your life IMO.

It's the most important thing, I reckon. Your work will be many, many times better if you are passionate about the subject you are taking.

I'm presuming you mean for every hour spent socialising, you need to do 4 hours of study, right?

..

Thanks for all the advice and good wishes guys :)
