Does anyone think that possibly in the future there will no longer be a need (or option) to actually type a domain name out, but rather just say the domain to get to it? In other words, long names that are more exact could in turn be worth more that shortcut names and abbreviated names. Just a thought with the way technology is changing the way we do everything. What are your thoughts?

Only grandmas type domains anymore. Even they are catching on to favorites.

The way I'm trying to express the question, you wouldn't really even need a favorites. To go to a specific web page, you just say the name. The technology is already here. I think it's just a matter of time.

Another thought is what would happen to hyphenated domains.

Simply put, there will still be type-in as long as corporations advertise their brands and associated domain names.

I think there is an option already in use in the Health Care Industry
for voice to web control not sure what the limitations are.

I read an article a while back how the technology is assisting people
who would normally not be able to use a computer.

the main problems are with voice-to-url as an option within a browser enviroment are accuracy, privacy and security.
now optical computing is another kettle of fish..
best regards.

I don't believe type-ins will become obsolete. I do a lot of my work at my laptop in various places with other people around. I really don't want to speak everything out loud. Speaking URLs destroys your privacy. But that's just the way I see it.

I have a phone that already searches Google with voice commands. People look at me funny when I use it though. It handles long tail searches better than I would expect.

I think the trend will be for people to search by site name (ie. Facebook) rather than URL (facebook.com).

If they do search by URL, I would think, or hope, that the algo would be advanced enough to display the hyphenated version if it is a developed webpage, or to offer a choice.

There are so many misspellings on purpose that I don't see voice activated typing of domains being very useful.

Which is why I think the trend will be towards search and site names. Google will know when you say "flicker" that you are likely looking for Flickr. The only time I type in a domain is when I am researching domain names, and I don't think domainers are a big market consideration.
