I'm starting work on a YouTube clone for my country and was wondering generally how much bandwidth will be required?

Hoping to get some input or stats from existing YouTube clone owners. Thanks. :)

Lots! I remember reading once that youtube was paying $1mm per DAY on hosting!

How about Youtube clones? :-/

The smaller (or big but not as big as Youtube) ones that you guys have?

Depends on how much traffic you get.....and since we don't know what name you are developing, it is hard to say.

If you are deving nakedcoed.tv you will need a LOT of bandwidth.
If you are deving asmallpieceofpaperpicturebutnovideo.tv you won't need hardly any.

Both available. :tu:

I was just hoping to get a brief estimate. Hmm. I think mine is somewhere in between nakedcoed.tv and asmallpieceofpaperpicturebutnovideo.tv. Hopefully 100GB can tide me over for now.

Thanks Showbiz. :D

Just a hint, if you are using more then 100GB of transfer a month, you need to find a way to make money from your site, or you will be in deep doo-doo.

Thanks for your advice. I really appreciate it. :)

If it doesn't make money, it's just gonna live off my other sites' adsense revenue for some time. :D

I am also starting at about 100GB and we can go from there....

If you spending more on hosting, you should be making more.... well thats my theory anyway... If not, Ill be the bloke picking up the cans at the train station.

add:

some stuff my guy sent me in an email:

There's always the dedicated servers in Israel that give you 1gbit unmetered for $400/mo

Last time I checked you could get a 100 mbps line from ev1 for ~$2200.

To be honest, I dont have a clue how it works, but hurdles are always there to be jumped.

Can you only get hosting in your country where your doing business?
There are much cheaper places.

Hosting in my country is much more expensive, unfortunately.

A few hundred bucks a months should be able to support a video site just starting out.

BEFORE you make any hosting decisions - make sure that your host is supporting FFMPEG on the servers or your youtube clone will most likely NOT work. youtube clones are serving flash videos which require the ffmpeg module to be installed on the server. While the module is available free of charge, most hosts are either refusing to install it on a shared server (servage.net is one of them) others are ONLY providing an install if you buy a dedicated hosting package which can easily cost upwards of $150/mth.

Make sure you check with your host before you enter an agreement.

In terms of bandwith - 100GB should get you started, never underestimate the bandwith it takes to stream content though! it ads up VERY quickly - before you know it, you'll be serving TB. As it's been pointed out before - it's going to largely depend on the type of content you're serving.

Best of luck,

IB

You will have to find a way to monetize every single pixel, otherwise it would impossible to afford

Server

Hey guys,

I admin my own linux server, and have installed all the modules myself for my site, Beer.tv. If you need some assistance getting your site up, or even space on a server PM me and maybe I can help you out... If you are not fluent with linux and know how to install ffmepg and mencoder etc you will have a tough time... JMO.

Cheers.

Hey Hotnames

The site is not as profitable as I would like yet.. but we have to remember their is a definate incubation time before a site becomes a cash cow. It takes alot of time to setup, maintain, update, and promote the site before you can even begin to turn any profit... The great thing thus far is my stats continue grow X2 monthly.. which is very encouraging.. the vids I have on the site have been viewed over 5600 times just this month alone...

By the way.. we still have to chat more about some upcoming plans.. will try to connect with ya sometime this week on Gtalk.

Cheers.
