I recently made the mistake of getting involved with 1&1 by transferring 23 domains to them.
Everybody knows their scam billing practices so I thought turn off auto-renew and everything would be fine.
When I requested turning off Auto Renew, they put my domains into a "Pending cancellation" status which means I still own them in WHOIS, but they've locked me out of the DNS/contact configuration.
I have been calling them everyday for the last 5 days and their reps have given me nothing but lies.
1. The first rep told me that selecting "Turn Auto Renew Off" in their contract manager would not cause me to lose access to my domains, i.e. I would be able to point them and transfer them out anytime until the expiration date. How wrong she was.
2. I woke up the next morning showing that 20 out of 23 of my domains are in a "Pending cancellation" mode without the ability to change any settings on them. I called in and they confirmed I still own my domains, and promised that it would be fixed the same day.
3. I received a confirmation email from them the next day that the domains were "reactivated" but no. They are still stuck in "Pending cancellation" status. I called in again and spoke to an outsourced rep with a thick accent, where I had to scream at her to understand basic principles like auto-renew vs. cancellation. She kept feeding me the line that it would take 24-48 hours to reactivate the domains (for which I had NEVER requested cancellation) until I threatened to speak with a supervisor.
She refused to connect me to a supervisor, put me on hold for half and hour, and told me the problem would be fixed the next morning.
4. The next morning (today), I get an email and it reads as follows:
"The domains are currently set to auto renewal off. We can reactivate the domains and you will be charged for the new renewal fee. Please let us know how you wish to proceed."
The domains don't expire until 2018 for pete's sake. Of course, I replied to them saying that I refuse any further charges to my card and tell them to fix the problem.
5. Here's the latest reply:
"Domains with 1and1 are automatically set to renew each year. Turning the renewal off is a cancellation of our process. You want the renewals off and that is what they are currently set to. When you turn the renewal off you lose the ability to make any changes or updates to the domains. You only retain the registration until the domain expires. If you need to edit the DNS settings you would need to contact us to make the changes."
They have the most backwards system I have ever seen.
STAY AWAY FROM 1&1. The low prices are NOT worth the incompetency.
