Transfers from 1&1

I have many domains registered at 1&1.
It seems they are not the best (if not the worse) registar to easily transfer domains when sold.

I have many questions. Hope you can help me.

It is possible to transfer domains to other 1&1 accounts (from my account to the buyer's account) by "pushing" the domain?

Must I wait 60 days to tranfer the domain?

I has any cost to transfer from my account to the buyer's account?

If you have any other considerations I will really appreciate.

Thanks.

They are amongst the worst. You cannot push a domain at 1and1. All registrars make you wait 60 days from 1st registration to transfer a domain.

Thanks Stub.

And you, the pros, how do you manage this situation?. If I sell a domain registered in 1&1, how to proceed? There is a cost for transfers between two 1&1 accounts.

I want to be sure if in case. I do not want to bother the buyer with this issues.

To be honest, I occasionally take advantage of their domain deals, and always transfer out before expiry. I have never had an issue.

However, with that said, you do need to follow their instructions carefully.

If the domains are part of a hosting plan, you have to cancel the contract separately, even after you transfer your domains out. Otherwise you will get billed for it comes up for renewal. This is where a lot of the complaints arise from.

I agree that this is stupid. But it doesn't have to be a problem if you just follow the steps in their FAQ.

I have never transferred to another 1&1 customer but here are their instructions for doing so:

However, I highly recommend you tell the recipient to consider transferring out to another registrar.

Here are the cancellation instructions after you get your domains out.

I would hate to say 1and1 is a horrible registrar due to their lack of easy domain management tools for domainers. You need to realize some registrars are not designed to cater to domainers. 1and1 is a company that has a greater interest in satisfying hosting customers. I have a server with them and have always had a reasonable level of satisfaction with them.

The question that really should be asked is are they a good domain registrar for the purpose of catering to the needs of their hosting customers? Most likely yes. Someone who runs a small business could care less about pushing domains and transferring names in and out on a regular basis.

So I think the point here is if you are a domainer looking for registrars with enhanced domain management tools that caters to the needs of domainers, then use a registrar that has that functionality. Simple as that.

Totally agree. Bulk domain management at 1&1 is nil.

Well first off, I wouldn't use 1and1 as your registrar of choice because almost nobody wants their domains registered at 1and1. I'd use GoDaddy because everybody knows about GoDaddy and trust them. The price difference isn't worth the inconvenience of using 1and1.

I'd also read RazorNF's post carefully. About canceling the hosting after you have sold the domain. In fact read both his links very carefully.

thank you all for your replies.

I sent a mail to them yesterday to clarify many points. I have to say that the answer arrived today, less than 24 hours after.

Here are some answers:

- It is no necessary to wait 60 days to transfer domains to another account inside 1and1 (for example: from seller to buyer).

- There is a cost to make these transfers.

- Expiration date do not change.

- Transfers inside 1and1 accounts need 6-10 hours.

- Transfers from 1and1 to another registar need 5-10 days (!!)

- It is not reccommended to start transfers when less than 10 days to expire.

For the rest of questions they send me to the faq.

Transferring a domain between two different Accounts

In this scenario, the domain is being transferred between two different accounts with different Customer ID numbers. Because the domain is moving between two different accounts, the account gaining the domain will be charged the domain registration fee as if it is a new domain registration.

It would be best to transfer your domains out to another registrar if you want to be a "domainer."

Keep an eye out for transfer specials. Lots of registrars are eager to gain new customers. I just missed a $6.99 transfer special with Name.com!

This is actually fairly normal. I know Namecheap won't process inbounds with less than a week left.

Different registrars have different wait times.

For example I have moved domains out of GoDaddy the same day, they are the only one I know of that lets you expedite the transfer out by logging into your control panel and manually approving it after you acknowledge the request.

And there are others like Moniker that make you wait the whole time before finally letting a domain go.

You can transfer out of Dynadot the same day, just like GoDaddy. But for me it's always been in the other direction :)

After 1and1 tried to put me in collections for turning off the autorenew on my hosting and emailing them to cancel it, I have lost all faith in them.

I use NameSilo.com now. They have a free API. $9 domains with free Privacy and 60-day lock period doesn't exist (nor should it at any registrar).

They should only lock the domain after initially receiving the domain on an inbound transfer.

All my life making money online I have only heard bad things about 1and1 domains. They had a special offer of 99 cents per .com domain a while back. I tried registering a couple of domains. Entered my credit card details and everything. But surprisingly my order went into pending. They didn't register the domains immediately like the case with godaddy namecheap and other popular registrars. I was a little annoyed.
My credit card wasn't charged and I never got any email from 1and1 domains. Not even for account creation(the kind of emails we get from godaddy and namecheap after creating accounts). Now they had my credit card details but my order remained pending for many days. It was spooky and annoying for me at the same time. I don't remember it exactly now but I think I contacted their crappy support system and requested them to cancel my order. I told them that I no longer wish to buy domains from them and will never buy anything from them.

I started to register my new domains at Moniker. I think it's a good place for domainers and there are nice solutions (push, escrow service, fast overviews, etc).
Now, I must pay attention to all domains regged at 1and1 and make transfers before expiring.

Again, thank you all.
