Kyle Tully posted on X that he paid $140 to transfer his .ai domain name to Spaceship. The name moved over, he paid $140 but even though the checkout showed (including one year renewal). Spaceship replied Hey there! We use this template for all transfers, regardless …

They actually should change it to 1-year periods.
Well if the transfer fee was $200 for 2 years, and someone was paying $10,000 for a .AI domain name, they would probably not care about the transfer fee if the domain was being renewed for 2 years.

The vast majority of .AI are hand regs, not some $10K premium sale.

This includes the OP's domain.

It's a misleading comment by Vincent Cate.

The transfer is more than the cost of the registration, with nothing in return.

Converted to 1-year periods (industry standard) .ai renewals range from $68.98 (Spaceship) to CAN$204.39 (CanSpace).

Switching to another registrar can save you a significant amount on renewals.

However, the prohibitive costs imposed by the .ai registry make transfers extremely challenging.

Yeah, you are essentially registrar locked unless you want to pay the ridiculous transfer penalty.

Ok some clarification on what Spaceship said about .co.uk not adding years.

The transfer of .CO.UK domains is free of charge and it does not include domain renewal as a part of the process.

Vince's line about helping registrars advertise, that's our job?

CanSpace is misleading. They are advertising a $249.99 CAD fee for a 1 year .AI domain but actually, that $249.99 CAD is actually for 2 years.

I obtained this information from a site that tracks registration, renewal, and transfer fees across all registrars (TLD-List).

I didn’t visit the registrar’s website as you did.

However, my main point is that you can save a significant amount of money by switching registrars in general. Don’t focus too much on the exact prices, as the .ai registry often complicates things, and registrants frequently need to inquire about these periods.

And as this thread shows, registrars are also getting confused by it.

Lol, Vincent comes across even worse than domain squatters in this context.

He's assuming all domain transfers are sales so therefore the buyer or seller should pay for it. 🤦‍♂️

Here's how GoDaddy is showing an .ai transfer in the cart (not my domain).

Note that the warning about non-renewal is only shown during the last step in the process.

Also, note the .sucks recommendation below. GoDaddy really likes doing this with us constantly.

The hype around the AI industry doesn’t necessarily translate to guaranteed returns, and the risk of the domain failing to attract interest or appreciate in value could outweigh the potentials..

I expect a major sh*tshow in the near future.

(from whois.ai FAQ)

How much money could this transfer fee actually be bringing the .AI registry? and Anguilla?

95% of $140 = $133

How many of the 478,696 registered domains will end up paying a transfer fee?

If 10% pay a transfer fee, then that's an estimated $6,366,656 going to the .AI registry.

What percentage goes to Anguilla?

I read somewhere that their lame .ai sales represent a 2fig percentage of their gdp

they just got seriously lucky with ai being what it is and that abbreviation
