Hi, I tried to transfer a domain from Domain.com to Dotster - but run into this error:

The domain name you specified is already in use. Please select a different domain name.

I understand it's due to the fact that their backend database is the same.

How do I go about this? Can I solve it on my own? Do I have to contact either Domain.com's or Dotster's support? Or is this something that's not that easy to get past?

So, I figured out how it works now. Maybe this will be helpful to others, so.

In order to transfer a domain from one EIG registrar to other follow these steps:
1) Request the EPP key (authorizaton) from the old registrar - and make sure that you have it in your mail before proceeding to step 2.
2) Contact the old registrar and ask them to remove the domain to be transferred out of your account with them.
3) Check that the domain has been removed from your account at the old registrar. If yes, ->
4) Initiate the transfer at the new registrar.

This has to be done like this because Domain.com, Dotster, Netfirms, Domain.com (and other EIG brands) all use the same backend database. If you try to add a domain to be transferred at the new registrar without removing it from your account at the old registrar you get this error:
[domain.name]: The domain name you specified is already in use. Please select a different domain name.

As for 2: ATM there is no way to remove it from the account on your own. I contacted them through chat and the agen removed the domain from my account. It might work via support ticket, too - I didn't do it, so, dunno.

Quite a mess. You get what you pay for...
