I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around trademark issues.

People say if you don't build your website around the same theme, you should be fine. However, I usually buy domains for reselling purposes - not to develop them.

For example, what if the domain has word "target" in it. Target is a trademark, but it is a generic word too, so should I be able to resell domain that has word target in it?

Same goes for some popular car model. I see cab services using it with no problem, but if I just want to resell?

Like you said as long as you don't copy them in any way, and as long as it is a generic name you should be fine

If and when you go to resell the name make sure that you are not implying any connection with any trademark. Do not approach any holders of said trademark or make any hint of the trademark. The best thing to do is put up a holder page with content that does not infringe on the trademark.

You should research trademark law as well as ICANN's Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy to get a good understanding of your rights and non-rights.

I registered two domains - both of them are generic and trademarks they are registered for are NOTHING related to their actual meaning.

For the sake of example, assume I registered:

target.com (for shooting tutorial site??)
charger.com (for selling chargers??)
apple.com (for selling fruits??)

^Both are trademarks, but the field of trademarks they are registered for are so off from their actual meaning.
can I develop any of these or should I delete as soon as possible? I'm guessing selling these is out of the question probably. If not, tell me how??

:talk:

one really needs to know exact domain, in order to give proper advice.

but yesterday i read in a trade mag:

"SPrint Side Pouch (tm) Bagging Systems"

notice how the word "sprint" appears in the ad line

of course we know about sprint the phone carrier, but above relates to packaging machinery.

so, usage is important when using terms that are trademarked.

Good Luck!
