He's a big IT guy, and I told him my idea of creating and growing a domaining business by buying domains, and developing them and building a portfolio.

His words were "don't, not worth the effort, besides domains are like the junk bond market"

I know asking this here answers may be bias, but what are your thoughts? I really would like to do what I set out to do, and I know his words won't dissuade me,but I'd love to hear others opinions who are doing this.

Buying domains for resale is not the same as developing domains.
More people are making a living from developing domains into websites, than domain resale.

Start slow! Invest in .com only and remember that 1 good domain is always better than several mediocre domains. Do lots of reading and research before spending your hard earned money :)

Bond market, there's an actual market. Domain names? You'll have to do the hard work to find a buyer.

Developing names? It will mean you will be a developer or pay to develop names. Are you developing or just domaining? or doing both?

1 super premium domain > 1000 mediocre ones.
Just remember it's always quality over quantity.

I would like to do both, perhaps, 80% Develop/ 20% Domain Resale.

A big IT guy - well just because he works in IT does not necessarily mean he knows about the domain or internet marketing arena! there is money to be made in this industry you just need the right knowledge and tools!

Friends don't let friends drink and domain.

I would get a second, third and forth opinion. There are many opportunities to earn revenue in this industry.

By the way, this won't be the first naysayer you meet.

If you develop, you will have better chances to do well. Just remember that most domains are easy to buy, but hard to sell.

Thank you for the encouragement, I really want to do well in this industry, I'll do whatever it takes, and won't quit until I succeed.

Best advice
Research then buy domain(s).
Not buy domains then wonder how!

Plus IT guys know Jack about domaining
