Tips for Buying a domain?

Hi Folks,

Brand new here. I'm just trying to get some info on how to make an offer on a domain name. I'm sure it's pretty much dependent on... well, a lot of stuff I don't understand, BUT: Here's the short version. There's a .com, two word domain I want that's owned by a large online publisher. They have not ever used the domain for anything. The domain doesn't really have anything to do with what this online publisher does (at least not overtly). They've just been sitting on it for a couple of years. Never built a site for it. Along comes me. I own the .net, .org, .tv, .info, .biz for this domain. I don't have a business associated with it yet. I'm not going to reveal the name, obviously, but I will say this: it's a name that would resonate instantly with a certain group of online marketers, but not with mainstream folks. I would probably be meaningless to the average person, even if they're a marketer. So what do I do? I want to make a fair offer, but as low as possible, obviously. I'm open to a PM discussion on this. Where I could give more detail. I appreciate the help.

Think "why is this available?" , am i going to sell? , am i going to develop? , long or storm term investment, etc before registering a domain!

contact the owner and ask if it is even available.

a clarification

the domain IS available... they already told me to make an offer.

If you want to PM me I could give you my opinion on what it is worth. Other than that we can't really help much without knowing what it is.

then email them your best offer, then if they counter, if you really like the domain and you got plans for it, then pay whatever they want for it.

If they've asked you to make an offer, odds are your not the first to inquire. Make a fair offer that you would consider, submit it via writing and place a time-limit on that offer. Show them your professional and you may just get what you want.

Spade's advice is spot on. And if Domain Raiders is offering an appraisal of the name then go for it - perfect two people to advise IMO

Very good advice in this thread.

Imagine you're the owner, then make a reasonable offer you wouldn't scoff at. That'll be your safest bet :]

Which offer? As far as I understand the domain name OP talking about has not been registered yet ;)
