Tips for acquiring a domain

Hi,

There's a domain that I really want, and because it's already taken, I have no choice but to try and acquire it.

What are some tips on acquiring domain names? What to say? What not to say?

Also, the domain is privately registered by "Domains by Proxy". How do I contact the owner?

You can send an e-mail listed in the whois and it'll go the owner. Send an e-mail with an amount that the seller won't refuse. Hard to say the dollar value without knowing the domain.

It depends on the owners privacy settings. They could be dumping all emails.

Best bet is to try the whois email even if it listed privately as they forward to the owners account email. Assuming they monitor it you can just ask if the name might be available for purchase and see if they respond back with a price in their email. Most sellers add padding to the price of their names for wiggle room so don't be afraid to negotiate.
